Abi Kitcher: PR SSU Alumni

I graduated with a 2:1 in PR and Comms back in July this year after just having bagged myself a job as a PR and Comms Graduate Intern for The Student Hub. It’s very weird to think I am now part of the PR SSU Alumni, not quite sure how I feel about that! I miss the course a lot but I am also loving being in full time work and have adjusted to being a member of staff at Solent quite quickly.

The role I have here as a Graduate Intern is varied. No day is ever the same. An average day for me is maybe a meeting about a current project I am working on in regards to student wellbeing, featuring in Facebook live videos, handling the Student Hub social media and promoting student services at events like Freshers Fayre and World Mental Health Day. It felt weird to be a member of staff during Freshers Fayre!

As well as working on various things, I am still trying to advance my skills. Part of my target whilst I am here is to teach myself skills such as Photoshop and InDesign as these are programmes I struggle to get my head around so have always avoided! Now, when I have a quieter time in the office, I tend to have a look at some tutorials to teach myself and hopefully I will become more confident in using this specific software.

I have some exciting possibilities over the next few months and so I will keep quiet for now but I’m sure I will share at some point on my blog! It’s really nice to have options and feel like you’re definitely in the correct area of work!

Another option I would like to look at in the future is doing a Masters in PR here at Solent. I loved the course at undergraduate level and would love to further advance my knowledge in the area, purely because of my passion for it.

I am attending the “Aim Higher” event on 1st November to represent the PR course as part of an Alumni panel. So current students will be able to ask any questions they would like! I couldn’t thank the PR SSU team enough for supporting me through my 3 years of study at Solent, it was truly unforgettable.
