Students studying for masters degrees in international maritime business and international shipping and logistics visited the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) last month as guests of the IMO Secretary General, Mr Kitack Lim.

The World Maritime Day celebration, held on 29 September, saw the IMO put on a range of events including a forum discussion on the 2016 World Maritime Day theme “Shipping: indispensable to the world”. A panel of experts in the maritime field addressed wide-ranging subjects on maritime sustainability, globalisation, regulation, technology, social engagement and the maritime industry’s profile and image.

For the first time ever the event was broadcast live around the globe with live questions and feedback coming from as far afield as New Zealand.

The students later attended a reception alongside global diplomats.

Speaking about the day, student Akua Sobekwa said: “It was an amazing experience and a great opportunity for us to participate in the World Maritime Day celebrations at the IMO.”
