Putting the technology into maritime training

Continuing its forward-focussed approach to maritime training and education, experts from Solent University’s Warsash Superyacht Academy will be on hand to highlight its portfolio of courses and innovative approach to maritime simulation, cybercrime, and superyacht design at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

This summer, Solent opened the UK’s largest and most sophisticated maritime simulation centre, situated on the University’s main campus in Southampton.

The centre is an important part of the £43 million investment that the University is putting into maritime education and training at Solent. It is kitted out with the latest equipment and software from Wärtsilä including: eight full mission bridge simulators; over 50 part task simulators; a full mission engineering room simulator; high voltage simulators; liquid cargo simulators; on-and off-shore crane simulators; GMDSS radio communications and VTS suites and DP simulators.

The new centre was officially opened by Sir Michael Bibby Bt., DL, President of the UK Chamber of Shipping. Speaking at opening he said: “There is no doubt that these centres can give better training and improve safety for everyone at sea. I would like to thank the University for creating, developing and making this facility into the fantastic place it is.”

This state-of-the-art centre offers the opportunity for several new specialist training courses, such as dynamic positioning, vessel traffic management and ice navigation.

It features hundreds of ship models, including the very latest superyachts which will be used by cadets and maritime professionals alike, and everything is networked for joint exercises between bridge and engine compartments, or ship and shore.

The centre will also play a pivotal role in the University’s maritime research - from Sea Traffic Management to the machine execution of COLREGS, and further studies looking at navigational safety and the human-machine interface and operations.

In response to a rise in cybercrime at sea, Warsash Superyacht Academy has launched a new portfolio of courses aimed at tackling the challenges yachts and crew face.  A new entry level online Cyber Security Hygiene course introduces awareness and best practice, providing essential training for all vessel and shore based personnel.  Cyber Security Operational training then builds upon these pillars to train crew about the advanced threats and vulnerabilities including risk mitigation.  A Three-day Advanced Cyber Security Training programme provides the tools and techniques for skilled personnel to receive the most sophisticated cyber management training available anywhere in the world.

Staff are also available to talk about Solent’s new MSc Superyacht Design course, which enables naval architects and experienced marine engineers to learn more about state-of-the-art design and engineering for superyachts.

If you would like to find out more about the new facilities and courses on offer at Solent University’s Warsash Superyacht Academy come and talk to staff at Superyacht UK pavilion stand DS123.
