Pete Richardson discusses the evolution of audio

Pete Richardson, Technical Instructor in Media Tech, was recently invited by the Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers (SMPTE) to talk about the evolution of audio within TV and film from an educational point of view, as part of an expert panel that included specialists from the BBC and ITV.

“Almost everyone in the UK watches television at some point, but often the sound is taken for granted,” Pete says. “There’s a lot of research and development being undertaken to improve the experience for the audience, and SMPTE are involved at every step of the way.”

An internationally recognised and accredited leader in media technology, SMPTE are involved in developing technology standards, promoting networking and interaction, and providing education for students, graduates and professional members though journal, conferences, seminars and meetings.

A number of SMPTE members were present for the opening of Solent’s new Dolby Atmos suite in our 3D cinema last year – making Solent one of just a handful of universities worldwide to make use of this cutting-edge technology – and Pete was invited along to discuss how the Atmos suite and Solent’s other great media technology facilities were enhancing the University’s technical education for audio.

Building professional connections for Solent students

A number of students from Southampton Solent’s media technology programme were also able to take part in the discussion. Tom Larbey, third-year BSc (Hons) Live and Studio Sound, says: “The talk developed my understanding on what immersive sound can do in the domestic and commercial world, improving my background knowledge for my final-year project relating to Dolby Atmos.

“It was a great event to meet professional and leading engineers that helped to make new contacts as well as building bridges between the educational sector and leading industry companies.”

Solent University has strong links with SMPTE, hosting meetings for the southern region and recently forming the first SMPTE UK student chapter – giving students a fantastic new way to connect with graduates and industry professionals.
