In today’s ‘meet the apprentice’ we meet George Woolliss, 24, currently employed at Sunseeker International Ltd - and on the Digital and Technology Solutions Professional Degree Apprenticeship.
George started his apprenticeship with Sunseeker in 2012, and has progressed up to the position of assistant electrical engineer...
Hi George, tell us about why you decided to start an apprenticeship?
I decided to start an apprenticeship because I wasn’t enjoying 6th form and I wanted to test myself in a more practical way and the Sunseeker apprenticeship scheme offered me that chance.
Can you give us an overview of your career/education history to date?
I completed my GCSEs and A levels and then started my apprenticeship in 2012 and have now moved into the electrical design department as an engineer.
What would you like to get out of the course/future goals?
I would like to achieve at least a 2:1 in my degree and then use the knowledge that I have learnt at university in designing better and more reliable networks on our yachts that can implement the advancements in technology.
How are you finding the course so far?
The course has been good and the lectures are knowledgeable about their subject and will always help you when you have an issue. I am at the University one day a week from 9am until 6pm, and then I work four days a week in the design department as an electrical engineer.
Why would you encourage others to enrol on the course?
I would encourage others to do an apprenticeship degree because you can use what you learn directly at work and you will still get a full day’s pay attending!
How are you finding life at Solent University?
I am enjoying my time at Solent University, the classrooms are fully equipped with everything that you need to be able to complete the course, the facilities around the campus are good with plenty of eateries, and there is an extensive library that can assist your learning.
