The UK section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) met at Southampton Solent University on Thursday 22nd September to discuss recent developments in High Dynamic Range (HDR) technologies including PQ and HLG.

Discussions were led by Peter Wilson and revolved around the need for standardisation, how best to use the bit-depths available and how to convert between formats. The meeting was attended by a good number of students from the Media Technology Programme. Students from Media Technology recently formed the first student chapter of SMPTE. The students had the opportunity to join in discussions and network with leading professionals in the field. This meeting was particularly auspicious as we were joined by SMPTE’s executive director Barbara Lange.

The Media Technology programme encompasses a range of applied science degrees in the areas of audio, vision and acoustics. It works closely with a range of industry partners to create media aware technologists that are suited to contemporary job roles within exciting and expanding industries.
