Solent University was visited by renowned sound engineer and designer Dennis Baxter on the 19th of February 2016. Dennis is a broadcasting engineer legend who has been responsible for the sound of the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, the World Cup, and NASCAR, earning him five National Television Emmy® Awards for sports audio.

Taking a break from his preparation of major sporting events, Dennis came to Solent University and gave a fantastic three hour lecture in Lecture Theatre 1, taking many questions from the students, and answering them all in his passionate way by providing plenty of humorous anecdotes to illustrate his answers. It was an exceptionally engaging afternoon, providing great insight into the life of an industry legend.

The invited lecture covered the developments of sound design within outside broadcasting, giving trade secrets and demonstrations from his work at the Winter Olympics. Towards the end of his lecture Dennis discussed the most recent changes to sound design since stereo: Object-based audio.

Dennis ended the lecture by asking the students to keep studying hard, make connections in the industry, and always take on challenges. It has certainly worked for Dennis!
