On Saturday 3rd December, students from the Media Tech programme spent the day rigging and running the Chichester Carol Services with the BBC. Students from a range of courses and all three years from the undergraduate programme set up a 3 camera shoot, video distribution to multiple screens around the venue, and an audio recording of the well-attended Christmas carol service at Chichester Cathedral.
Due to servicing commitments, the outside broadcast truck was unavailable this time around, meaning a complete flyaway package was designed and rigged on site, hours before the radio broadcast.
Sony PMW400 system cameras with racks operation were used to ensure a professional visual output – a very useful skill for any technical video student to have to help prepare them for industry.
Solent have supported this technical challenge with crew from BBC Sussex for the past 5 years, allowing students to gain valuable work experience across a number of important disciplines with the broadcast industry.
