Members of the media technology team descended on Sky’s broadcasting facility in Chilworth recently for a technical tour and to discuss how best to prepare the next generation of broadcast engineers.

The team explored several areas of the site including acquisition, playout and transmission covering a range of signal formats including baseband, compressed and radio frequency signals. It was fascinating to see the wide range of technologies in common usage, from tape archives, serial control protocols and FTP, through to state-of-the-art devices for internet delivery and remote operations.

Sky has been impressed by the knowledge of Solent's media technology students and are keen to work closely with the course team to provide additional hands-on experience.

We’re looking forward to a further trip to their main facility in Osterley as well as working together on future projects.
