Five Solent graduates were among the television professionals to take part in the Royal Television Society (RTS) Southern Region’s annual Meet the Professionals event last week.

Over 30 undergraduate students from the Television Production degree joined fellow media students from Bournemouth University and the University of Winchester at the event, during which current students meet and network with a range of professionals working in TV.

This year, organisers sought to include very recent leavers who are already working in the industry and Solent were represented by two 2016 graduates – Kelsey Gallagher and Andy Taylor. Kelsey is a production coordinator at Aurora Media Worldwide, and Andy is an editor/edit assistant with Sunset + Vine. Both are working in companies which focus on sport production, though neither admitted to any particular desire to pursue this particular field while at university.

Both Kelsey and Andy inspired the current undergraduates by recalling that they had attended this event last year as students, and were now there as professionals.

Also participating in the event as professionals were George Gregory (2012 graduate), Senior Creative Producer at Fixers, Alan Ferguson (2009), Development Producer at Grace Productions, and Tom Levin (2009) Archive and Sales Manager at Newsflare.

All five participated in an opening plenary session during which current students were shown a route into the industry and a progression line through it, using the graduates of different ages as examples.

The subsequent break out session allowed students one-to-one networking time with all the professionals at the event. Freelancers, as well as representatives from BBC, Meridian, Woodcut Media, That’s Solent and Vice were available for students to meet.
