Solent University was proud to support the Hampshire Football Association by providing comprehensive coverage of the Youth Cup Final at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton. This was a joint collaboration between the Media Technology programme, who provided engineering services, Television Production who provided camera operators and directors, and Sports Journalism who provided the pitch side presenters and commentators.

It was a challenging brief with around 700 people in attendance and a similar number watching the live stream via YouTube. There were four engineering cameras being controlled and directed from the temporary gallery, which the students had constructed. Multi-camera ISO recordings were also taken for future training on vision mixing, directing and EVS operation so even more students can get the operational experience after the event.

It was great to get the three course teams together to work on such a high profile project. There were plenty of opportunities for the engineers to hone their problem solving skills; vision monitoring for remote commentator positioning; discretely issuing timing cues to presenters without earpieces through talkback; and lining up cameras with the lighting changing from a sunny afternoon to drawing into dusk and then finally floodlights.

Well done to all involved. We were pleased with the results and hope to work the Hampshire FA again.
