Second and third year students studying Live Sound Technology and Live Sound Techniques took part in some hand-on workshops with Expression Events this week. The units form part of the Media Technology programme’s BSc (Hons) Live Sound Technology, BSc (Hons) Audio Engineering, and BSc (Hons) Music Technology pathways.

Expression Events are based near Southampton and are a well-known provider of audio, lighting, staging, power distribution and rigging solutions for event productions. Director, Lewis Richardson spent a day with second and third years running through some training on L'Acoustics line arrays in the University’s theatre. They were learning how to safely connect and operate such systems whilst learning their integrated amplifier systems. The output could be heard three floors below the theatre at times so they obviously found the level control!

The third years were treated to a further days of training at Expression Events’ warehouse learning how to safely fly line arrays. The students used SoundVision software to design the system, before assembling and configuring the speaker systems from scratch.

Both days were extremely valuable for the students, providing them with the opportunity to experience large-scale systems first hand and ask questions of seasoned professionals. We’re very grateful to Lewis for giving up his time.
