The best female cricketers in the world to appear on one stage.

England captain Charlotte Edwards has been announced as the captain of the Southern Vipers who are playing in the Kia Super League this summer. This competition will show the best female cricketers in the world on one stage.

It was announced on Wednesday 6 April by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) that Charlotte will play alongside England’s Lydia Greenway and Natasha Farrant.

Charlotte said: “I’m really excited and happy to be a Southern Viper. The Ageas Bowl is somewhere that I’ve always enjoyed playing and I have particularly fond memories of winning the Women’s Ashes there in 2013.”

Southampton Solent University is one of the six hosts of the Southern Consortium for the Kia Super League. Members include; Hampshire Country Cricket, Sussex Cricket Ltd, and Wiltshire Cricket Ltd.

Director of Solent Sport and women’s cricket coach, Phil Green, said: “Having Charlotte Edwards announced to play when she is such a big name in women’s cricket is very exciting news – she’ll be excellent.

“As one of the consortium members of Southern Vipers, our involvement will mainly be operational as we will be assisting in preparation of the players for the games; in areas such as strength and conditioning training through the University’s High Performance Academy, and delivering sports psychology sessions. Players in full-time education will also have the option to use the University’s facilities while they are here.

“We are hoping to get as many students involved as possible and are providing them with the opportunity to gain some fantastic real-world experience.

“Solent’s women’s cricket captain Charlotte Taylor was close to selection for this year’s squad and will be involved in training camps. Hopefully in the future this kind of competition will act as a platform for our students to earn selection as players.”

Tickets for the Ageas Bowl’s Southern Vipers matches can be purchased online:, over the phone on 0844 847 1863, or by visiting the Ageas Bowl’s Ticketing & Membership Office via normal working hours.
