Having been learning about airport operations, students learnt how each area of the airport differed from – and at the same time depended on – another. Plus, senior managers spoke to them about how the airport functions, the challenges of its operation, and the ways of getting into the industry.
Joanne Hooker, Head of International, Tourism & Events, says: “It was amazing to see one of the most important employees at the airport at work on the runway – the bird scarer who patrols the runway looking for debris or wildlife that could potentially cause a catastrophic accident.
“It showed students that regardless of the job, from bird scarer, to waste collection, to passport control, there is a vital role for everyone in the day-to-day running of a busy airport.”
Student Alex Parkinson, adds: “It was exciting to have the chance to see what the public don’t usually get to see. It gave us a practical experience to mix in with what we’ve been taught in the classroom.”
