Biography

Alex has been teaching at Solent University since 2007 on a variety of English language and business courses from foundation to postgraduate level, specifically Academic English Skills, English for Special Purposes and Business English. She is also an experienced IELTS teacher and has been an examiner for the British Council.  She understands the needs of international students, having worked and studied abroad in Spain, Singapore, Portugal and Australia and she spent some years working at IBM UK and Solvay Healthcare in business administration roles. 

For the last two years Alex has been a Research Assistant on the EU funded Marilang project, developing a global Maritime English language test for deck officers.

  1. Research interests

    Alexandra is interested in researching language assessment for students of Maritime English and students entering UK higher education.
  2. Teaching experience

    Alex has been teaching home and international students on Level 3 to 7 courses and bespoke summer programmes at Solent University for 11 years. 

    She has also supported students on the ITEFL unit and provided teacher training to Henan Province high school teachers (2011-15), Ningxia University lecturers (2014) and English teachers from UNSE, Argentina (2013 and 2016).

     

     

    • Alex has been an IELTS trainer for health professionals at BUPA, an EFL and IELTS teacher at Itchen Sixth Form College, an ESOL teacher at Southampton City College, and Sociology cover teacher at Alton Sixth Form College, as well as a private tutor for GCSE English and Spanish. 
    • She also has experience teaching EFL in language schools in Portugal, Singapore and Australia.

    Alexandra is currently working on “Developing Test Specifications” – a chapter for the Marilang book for the EU funded Marilang project to develop a global Maritime English language proficiency test for Deck Officers, 2016-2018.
