I was born in the former USSR and grew up in one of the newly formed European states. This gave me very rich life experiences and gave me an insight on how impractical many theoretical solutions can be.

With that in mind, I embarked on a degree in business management and then subsequently a masters on sustainability and management to understand the capabilities and limitations of businesses. Having worked at Santander on a graduate scheme and later in financial recruitment, I wanted to continue my education and was offered a full-time scholarship from the European social fund to undertake a PhD project with Plymouth University looking at the creation of a port sustainability management system through extensive industry collaboration with local port managers.

During my PhD I got to experience how policy, environmental and economic challenges underpinned the need for a sustainable management of those organisations and the need for change to remain operational and profitable. I also got a chance to make several dozen port visits and collaborate with industry practitioners over a period of 2.5 years.

As a result of my work, one participating port reviewed skills of its board of directors based my system and successfully implemented external and internal organizational change to address weaknesses identified. In the words of one manager: That is the most comprehensive analysis of what skills you need to actually run ports”.

I have published my results in the journal of Marine Policy and presented my work during three international conferences, including the World Conference on Transportation Research in Rio de Janeiro in 2013.

I have always enjoyed teaching and always bring lots of enthusiasm to my lectures to make them interactive, educational and relevant to the current economic climate. Aside from academia, I was trained as a classical/jazz pianist and I am currently a junior instructor in martial arts.
