Charles Caplen graduated with a first class honours degree in economics from the University of Portsmouth in 1996 after a career in the military, where he initially left in 1993 with the rank of Captain.
After obtaining his honours degree, Charles furthered his educational studies and completed a postgraduate certificate in education in 1997 whilst teaching part-time at the then Southampton Institute (SIHE). This was followed by a master's degree in environmental economics, gained with distinction at University College London (UCL) the following year. He then started his academic career as a full time lecturer in economics, European business and current affairs at the then SIHE in September 1998.
Charles also completed a PGCR (research) in 1999 and is currently a senior lecturer in the Southampton Solent University's School of Business, Law and Communication. He has also spent seven years concurrently working in the voluntary sector, being Executive Officer Commanding Southampton (Solent) Area ACF, completing in 2008 with the rank of Major.
Charles is currently the course leader for the part-time HNCD Business suite.
