Biography

Fayyaz is an Associate Professor (Engineering Design) in Solent's Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering.

He graduated in mechanical engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology (Pakistan) in 1995. He has over five years’ industrial experience of working as a mechanical/structural designer and design manager, both in the UK and overseas.

Fayyaz has over 15 years’ experience of teaching and research in the fields of engineering design and manufacture, both in UK and in overseas. In 2000, he obtained his MSc in Computer Aided Engineering Design from the University of Strathclyde and PhD in Engineering Design from the same university in 2005. He worked as project Coordinator on a European Commission funded project entitled 'Strengthening Asian Higher Education in Advanced Design and Manufacture' worth over 1 million Euros at the University of Strathclyde.

He is a Fellow of Higher Education Academy, a Chartered Engineer from the Engineering Council and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Designers.  He is also vice chair and committee member of the Consortium of UK Manufacturing Engineering Heads (COMEH), a UK-based body responsible for promoting manufacturing engineering education and research, as well as organising the International Conference on Manufacturing Research (ICMR) conference series annually.

Fayyaz is also a regional member of interviewing panel for CEng/IEng applications of the Engineering Council, and for membership applications for the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED). He is the external examiner for various undergraduate and postgraduate courses of different UK higher education institutions, as well as a PhD external examiner. He is also a reviewer of various international conferences and peer reviewed journal papers in the fields of engineering design and manufacture.

  1. Industry experience

    Fayyaz has over five years' industrial experience working as a design engineer in Doosan Babcock, UK, and as an assistant manager in Heavy Mechanical Complex (HMC), Pakistan.

    His work experience in industry included:

    • Development of standardised modular designs and design calculations of overhead pedestrian steel bridges
    • Designing and analysis of supporting steel structures (gangways, walkways, stairs, etc) for various process (cement, sugar and power) plants’ customers.
    • Designing and installation of various large material handling systems (belt conveyers, screw conveyors and bucket elevators) used in process plants.
  2. Teaching experience

    Fayyaz has over 15 years' teaching experience, both at FE and HE institutions in the UK, as well as overseas.

    Fayyaz's teaching as involved:

    • Course material development and delivery of various modules of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, both in UK and overseas. Fayyaz delivered modules such as CAD and the Design Process; Computer Modelling and Simulation; Modelling and Mechanics of Products, Visualization and Analysis; Analysis and Design Optimisation; Engineering Mathematics; Drawing and CAD; Applied Mechanics; Applied Mathematics for Mechanical Systems; Mechanical Principles; Analysis of Materials; Modelling, Simulation and Visualization; Materials in Design; Design Management; Manufacturing Processes; Advanced Laser Processing; Process Planning and CAM; CAD and Product Data Management and Mechanical Science.
    • Supervision of numerous final year BEng/BSc project students based on industry problems.
    • Collaboration with local industry through the introduction of live industrial briefs related to engineering design as a part of module assessments.

  3. Research interests

    Fayyaz is interested generally in engineering design and manufacture-related research, but particularly in: CAD/CAM/CAE, digital manufacturing and simulation; design for X (assembly, additive manufacturing, recycling, all) methodologies; advanced manufacturing techniques, such as laser machining, EDM and additive manufacturing techniques; industry 4.0 application/smart factories.
