Professor Tim Wilks Senior Lecturer

School of Art, Design and Fashion

023 8201 3117 ext. 3117 Room no. JM205

Tim Wilks childhood memories are of growing up in Southern Europe, East Africa, the Middle East and the Far East. His secondary education began in Singapore and ended in Oxford. He read modern history at the University of Oxford, and it was there that one of his tutors, H.G. Schenk, an intellectual who had fled from the Nazis in 1938, introduced him to cultural history and also (though the term had not yet been invented) cultural memory.

Tim went on to pursue postgraduate studies at Oxford, gaining the diploma in the history of art, for which he studied art theory, specialised in 15th-cenury Italian art, sculpture and architecture, and wrote a dissertation on English art collecting in the 17th century. After spending some time in the corporate world, he returned to Oxford to gain a doctorate. He has been a fellow of the Royal Historical Society since 2008.
