Kate O'Driscoll, Senior Lecturer

Biography

Kate had a 20 year career working in broadcast television before joining Solent University in 2014.

Her extensive filmography includes the BBC’s award winning series  Who Do You Think You Are?  and the critically acclaimed Channel 4 series,  Family Century  which she series produced. In addition, Kate was a director on the BAFTA nominated series  Rooted  and produced  Bringing Home the Bacon, which was nominated for the Rory Peck Award.

Kate has a track record of access-driven filmmaking and negotiated unprecedented access to the highly secretive Istanbul Narcotics Police and filmed with the Metropolitan Police for 18 months with their sexual offences unit. As a development producer, she has devised and developed many projects over the years, including C4’s How To Get Divorced  and Five’s  Combat Chefs.

Kate is still active in the TV industry, having recently produced and directed a number of documentaries for the BBC including A Tale of Two Theatres, a fly on the wall documentary about two historical theatres struggling to survive.

Kate also heads up Solent TV, the University's student TV web channel.

Kate's areas of expertise are in producing and directing within the broad genre of factual programming, including devising and developing ideas, creating formats and working with both corporate and broadcast clients.

She brings a combination of academic learning and practical experience to the modules she teaches which include: Documentary Production, Live Briefs and Professional Practice and Research and Development for Television.
