Role at Solent

Paul is director of the School of Media Arts and Technology. The School is currently the largest school at Southampton Solent University, with approximately 2,400 students across a wide range of courses in disciplines including broadcasting, popular music production and performance, music promotion and management, television, film and media production and technology, sound, performance, visual effects, special effects, CGI, animation, game development and art, computing, cyber security, computer networking, information technologies, web development and acoustic technologies.

The School is greatly enhanced by its unprecedented links with the media industries, and regularly works with leading companies, such as the BBC, and on high profile projects including Glastonbury Festival and Camp Bestival.

The School has also developed a number of unique enterprise units, such as Solent Productions for film and television, consultancy Solent Acoustics, music enterprise Solent Music and the specialist post-production film and television editing group Solent Post, as well as the University's own television platform Solent TV. 

Experience

Paul has worked in both higher and further education, and has taught all levels from adult basic education to master's degree level in a career spanning over 25 years.

Paul joined Southampton Solent University (then known as Southampton Institute) in 1996 and has taught on most units across media, cultural studies, communication, English and history. His teaching specialisms have been in both theory and practice – most notably in psychoanalysis, cultural theory and creative writing (particularly screenwriting).

Paul’s research interests fall mainly within literature, cultural history and representations of masculinity, predominantly within the period 1870-1930, focusing in particular on the First World War.
