This online learning course is aimed at recreation water users across all water activities to provide a basic understanding of navigation and safety while afloat. The course is ideal for fishermen, kayakers, small boat sailors, jet-skiers and powerboaters, particularly those who have  recently completed their Powerboat Level 2, PWC Proficiency or dinghy or keelboat Level 2 courses.

The syllabus expands on knowledge already gained and covers the following areas:

  • Engine checks
  • Buoyage
  • Tidal awareness
  • Visual and electronic navigation
  • Pilotage
  • Rules of the road
  • Anchoring
  • Weather forecasts
  • Passage planning

The course should take about 6-8 hours to complete. We'll be on hand to offer help should you need it. To get a feel for the course and what to expect, you can log in as a guest:

The course fee includes your log-in details for the interactive website, as well as your learning pack, which contains a chart, plotter, dividers, course handbook, exercises and an electronic chart plotter CD.

Book your place 

Once your booking has been received we'll set you up on the course and you'll receive a username and password for the RYA interactive site by email within one working day. If you don't receive it within this time, please contact us. You'll also be sent your learning pack by post. If the address provided in the online booking information is not the address you would like the pack sent to, please contact us as soon as you book to give us the address to where you would like your pack sent.
