European Work Placements

Work placements under the Erasmus programme provide an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand work experience in an international environment.

Depending on the availability of funding and providing you fulfil the eligibility requirements, you may be eligible to get some funding under the EU funded Erasmus Work placement programme|. It is essential that you initially discuss this matter with your Faculty Erasmus coordinator.

Organising your work placement

The duration of the work placement must be for a minimum of three months and a maximum of 12 months. The duration and timing of your work placement must be agreed and approved by Southampton Solent University.

Where?

Erasmus work placements take place in one of the 31 EU countries and in any type of enterprise with limited exceptions. An eligible organisation is one that is involved in economic activities in the public of private sector; it can be of any size and can operate in any economic sector, including the social economy. The following types of organisations are not eligible as host organisations:

  • European institutions(such as the European Commission) which have a paid traineeship scheme
  • Organisations managing EU programmes (such as National Agencies)
  • National diplomatic representation (Embassy/Consulate) of the student in the host country.

How?

  • You must be registered as a student in a course at Southampton Solent University.
  • You are responsible for organising your own work placement. Many students find the work placement independently by direct contact with an employer in another European country.
  • The British Council requires that some documentation be signed between the student, your Company and our Institutions. The Academic Partnerships Office will help you to finalise these.
  • If you are interested in doing  a work placement in Europe, please read carefully the Erasmus Student Work placement Guide produced by the British Council, and talk to the members of the Academic Partnerships Office about your possibilities.
