Promoting a healthy life, body and mind to ladies within the local community.

Health 4 Her is a weight loss intervention for women of ethnic minority and aims to improve the health and wellbeing of participants through education and physical activity in a female exclusive environment. Sessions are free to attend with free fitness equipment provided to participants to use within sessions and to take home for personal use.

Health 4 Her teaches health literacy, encourages a healthier lifestyle, supports behaviour change, boosts confidence, and increases social cohesion. The programme encourages healthy eating as well as weight loss. Sessions consist of a 10-minute wellness talk followed by a 50-minute moderate intensity exercise session. Topics include, but are not limited to, diet and nutrition, hydration, exercising at home, injury prevention, 5 ways to wellbeing mental health, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, sleep and stress. Participants are consulted on a regular basis in regard to what they would like to learn and discuss. Wellness packs related to the topics covered at each session will be provided alongside additional resources each week to encourage sustainability at an individual level. Homework outs are given as part of the resource pack to enable participants to train on days sessions are not running.

Body MOT health checks are performed regularly to measure impact on health. It also allows participants to find out more about their current health status, ask any questions and receive support to help make any lifestyle changes to improve their health.

Health 4 Her was conceptualised by a group of students as part of their Community Innovation Project in 2015 and has gone on to secure funding from ‘This Girl Can’, enabling Solent to offer sessions across the city and provide 150 home exercise kits.

Sessions run in blocks of 12 weeks throughout the year with current sessions held at the Solent Sports Complex on our East Park Terrace campus. If you know of a community group within Southampton who might benefit from the project, please get in touch by emailing us or calling us on 023 8201 3671.
