Email:Â Call:ÂThis challenging, creative course delivers all the skills you need to start your career as a professional make-up artist and more. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of the professional roles in the key areas of the industry from editorial and catwalk, to film, television and theatre.
You'll be introduced to three industry pathways that explore make-up and hair styling for fashion editorial, wig work for theatre, TV, as well as alternative design contexts (eg, publications, galleries and the catwalk), and be encouraged to take an experimental approach to application, materials and creative development processes to make your mark in industry.
With a focus on real-world learning, you'll gain key skills to stand-out in industry and make your unique mark, through character design and studio practice, underpinned with a thorough understanding of culture and consumer behaviour. And to enable you to operate across contemporary design platforms, you will be trained in photography, film and digital publishing.
We emphasise diversity and inclusion within design, while debating beauty ideals, gender politics and the changing face of identity. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to embrace and develop new ways of working, alongside the study of historic and contemporary techniques.
You will be taught by a team with strong reputations as practicing professional designers or researchers, as well as visiting lecturers, and a dynamic programme of industry speakers - recent speakers have included Carly Utting for Mac Pro And Lan Nguyen Grealis. And thanks to the course team's close links with industry you'll have the opportunity to work on a range of live project briefs with organisations, which have recently included Mac Pro, Nars, Rimmel Ingolot and Huda Beauty.
Practical experience is at the core of our real-world learning. Each year, our students work as part of a make-up team at Graduate Fashion Week, and we regularly host industry demonstrations. Students also benefit from kit support provided by leading brands, which have included Mac Pro, NARS, and Rimmel. Additionally, you are encouraged to attend events such as British Beauty Council gatherings and Mac Pro demonstrations in London.
And there are many collaborative opportunities with other students on projects such as GUNK Collective, an online multi-media platform that showcases the cutting edge vision of makeup, hair, prosthetics and special effects students; as well as experiences on shoots and catwalk events. You'll also have the opportunity to apply to work with our professional make-up team at London Fashion Week. These experiences help you contextualise your place within the industry, offering you a rich and stimulating education and preparing you for future employment.

Solent’s Make Up and Hair course is ideally suited to students who wish to expand their knowledge and develop their creative design skills in make up and hair - across editorial and catwalk, theatre and Film / TV. Applicants should have ideally studied a creative subject and have a portfolio of related art and design work to show as part of their application to the course.

In this module you'll engage with the core practices, techniques, and meanings of beauty within make-up and hair design contexts. Through studio-based workshops you'll develop foundational technical skills, establish safe and ethical working practices, and begin to build a critical awareness of how make-up and hair practices are shaped by wider social, cultural, and contextual factors.
This module will introduce you to wig and make-up skills with insight into the real-world industry setting, enabling you to develop your fundamental technical abilities and approach to historical design in relation to the staged body. You will formulate a body of supporting work using the cultural and social theories about wigs, which focuses on using external forces for inspiration.
This module explores the representation and influence of subculture within film and television, examining how alternative identities, aesthetics, and social movements are constructed and communicated on screen. Through critical analysis and practice-led learning, you'll engage with key subcultural references while developing foundational filming techniques, including camera operation, framing, lighting, and editing.
This module introduces you to the fundamentals of image making practice - you will learn about the function and uses of cameras, lenses, lighting and post-production techniques. You'll explore both studio and location practice, with practical demonstrations and hands-on participation, and you'll be introduced to standard industry practices, such as model releases.
Editorial Alchemy explores the creation of high-impact fashion and beauty visuals, challenging you to push beyond conventional aesthetics and develop elevated editorial work. Through practice-led learning such as live briefs, industry-focused workshops, digital media, and collaborative shoot environments you will engage with professional processes from concept development to execution.
In this module you'll understand the terminologies used and how the structure of the theatre industry and live performance works in relation to character creation. You'll explore how complex techniques can be used creatively and expand your critical approach to designing hair characterisation. Through the experimental application of materials applied to the face and body, you will create your character using theatrical direction techniques within practical seminars and workshops.
This module introduces and develops application skills and critical awareness on fashion and horror in film and TV. You'll explore film which has a rich history of prosthetics, hair, makeup and styling that have guided the evolution of horror. Having a wider knowledge and understanding of film can inform your work, giving you access to ideas and techniques that will help to raise the standard and complexity of your creations. You will be challenged by changing the familiar into the unknown.
This module will develop your understanding of your industry and help you position yourself within it through brand identity creation, freelancing skills and portfolio building. You'll build your personal brand through image portfolio creation, web production, and CV enhancement; and you will develop your technical skills in image construction through practical studio and location workshops.
You will create an authored body of work to a high professional standard, tailoring it to your specific areas of interest and chosen pathway. Your work will be informed by industry practice and you'll be encouraged to be both creative and innovative in your practice and research. You will need to implement a range of skills in image creation, design, web content, and exhibition curation, managing multiple elements into an industry ready portfolio.
In preparation for your major project, you will learn to devise, plan, and discuss an independent creative project focused on your own specific creative and/or career interests and in a media of your own choosing. This is your opportunity to use your artistic, intellectual, research, and technical skills in the proposal of an ambitious, original and critically engaged creative research project.
In this module, you will be expected to complete 100 hours of work-based experience. Engaging in a professional environment will help you develop the skills and experiences to work competently within the creative industries and boost your confidence, while providing an insight into the various job roles available to you.
In this module you will learn to independently employ practice-based approaches to research in the development and realisation of a creative project. Operating as an independent designer you will be develop, manage and realise of a creative research project. You will produce a substantial body of conceptually and technically advanced work, addressing an identified issue or design problem relevant to your own creative interests and visual culture.

Make-up and hair artists can work in a broad range of professions, spanning events, promotional campaigns, theatre, film, TV, editorial magazines and fashion shows.Â
The ethos of the course is that it operates as a creative hub, providing students with the skills to develop creative concepts and alternative approaches. Our key objective is to nurture exceptional make-up and hair designers, enabling them to be expressive, visionary and provocative with a wide range of abilities. Working in specialist photography, TV and film studios, there are amazing opportunities for collaboration with students from other courses.

Typical salary: £170 - £450 per day
Make-up artists working in fashion can earn £450 a day for an event like London Fashion Week, and around £275 for other events. For fashion editorial work head make-up artists earn £170 to £320 per day, depending on the designer. On major feature films, with budgets over £30million, a trainee make-up artist can earn £140 for a ten-hour day, while a key hair and make-up artist with several years' experience, will earn £410.

Graduation costs
There is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket is currently £20. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

Full-time
Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.
