Course overview

Skillset Media Academy|This degree offers you a well balanced experience, combining practical and academic study of the performing arts.

You will gain a real sense of variety as you experience the different demands of producing work for stage and screen, ranging from writing to directing. You will develop an even wider-ranging portfolio through working with students in other disciplines, including film, television and animation.

Visiting theatre directors, choreographers and voice specialists prepare the actors’ bodies for the modern entertainment industry. At the same time, critical faculties and dramatic writing and directing skills are nurtured by the wide-ranging academic studies.

Accredited by Skillset (the Sector Skills Council for the Creative Media) as part of the University's  Skillset Media Academy| – a national centre of excellence in media education.

  • Independent Theatre (student led). 

Year 2  

  • Modernity
  • Stage and Screen Projects
  • Body and Voice (stage combat, singing, dance)
  • Independent Theatre (student led).

Specialist units may include: Writing for Stage, Musical Performamce, Physical Theatre, British Theatre since 1945, Physical Comedy, Writing the Short Film.

Year 3  

  • Performance Research Project
  • Audition Skills
  • Contemporary Theatre
  • Collaborative Unit: TV
  • Collaborative Unit: Stage
  • Independent Theatre (student led).

Specialist units may include: Shakespeare and the Performer, The Hollywood Musical, Drama in Education, Directing, Choreography, Voice/Singing and Editing.

Career opportunities

Research and writing skills evidenced by the course support students wishing to go onto post-graduate teacher training. Performance skills developed during the course may lead to post-graduate courses that are purely performance based or direct entry to professional work with small-scale touring or regional repertory companies. The combination of academic and transferrable practical skills (self-confidence and good presentation, ability to team work, to take orders and delegate) should make our students attractive to employers in a number of industries.

Entry level

200 points from 6-unit or 12-unit awards.
You will also be required to attend an audition. 

Assessment

Assessment is mostly by coursework in the form of essays, video and stage projects, research reports and seminar presentations. There may be some examinations during the second academic year.

Special features

Drama PerformanceWe engage in a diverse range of activities aimed at developing skills and confidence. Students are encouraged to work in formal and informal performance (that is, cabaret, stand-up comedy, performance art)

Special facilities

The University has a large studio space for rehearsals and performances. This exciting and versatile space has adjustable seating for up to 200 people, Harlequin dance floor, fully equipped lighting rigs, PA system, and HD television studio capacity with projection and green-screen.
