This course will prepare you for a career in the marine service sector of the international shipping industry.

The collection of markets within the growing maritime industry hold thousands of employers with a wide range of discipline requirements. The units in this degree will equip you for roles in ship management, ship broking and chartering, insurance broking and underwriting, and ship finance. You'd also be well prepared for postgraduate study.
Combined with our strong industry links, you could also benefit from the optional Industrial Placement Year. Co-ordinated by a dedicated, full-time placement officer, you'd undertake this scheme between Levels 5 and 6.

Coursework and presentations (individual and group), navigation simulation and practical exercises afloat. Also, a dissertation in Level 6 and examinations.

Special features
Southampton Solent University is also located close to the Portsmouth Naval Dockyard. The Solent provides opportunities for yachting, navigation, oceanography, hydrography and environmental studies. Feedback from our Industry Liaison Panel ensures that current employer needs are met.

Special facilities
With the advantage of Southampton's superb geographic location, you'd have access to a wide range of study environments.
A recent addition is the 'Solent Surveyor', a new 10 metre catamaran Evolution 995, equipped to carry out inshore navigational training, hydrographic and environmental research.
On campus there are more practical testing facilities including a purpose-designed and equipped CAD design office, hosting virtually all of the currently available software used in the industry, plus maritime systems laboratories. These accommodate state-of-the-art computer systems for the management of coastal resources and treatment of coastal data.
Southampton Solent University also benefits from a 60-metre industry standard towing tank used for laboratory sessions and final year project work, as well as a 4-metre stability tank. We have built new fabrication shops for advanced composite construction, which will provide you with access to hi-tech materials and processes commonly used in the marine industry.
Field trips
These have recently included:

in London, Lloyd's insurance market and the International Maritime Organisation.
Industrial placements
There is an optional placement year between Level 5 and 6. Previous placements include a container terminal, port agency, tanker company and ship broker.
