Should I study postgraduate?

Do it it's really good fun it's very, very hard work but it's a year or two years for your life where you can indulge in what you want to indulge in and learn new skills and just thoroughly enjoy yourself really.

If you're hesitant just go and do it. I learned a lot it - was invaluable skills, from researching to academic writing and just really learning new things.

It's not easy you know. You have to be prepared to put the work in but if you're prepared to do that then I would definitely recommend it to anyone. It's been fantastic - I really enjoyed doing it.

When I was here I did not know what I wanted but with the professors, they guided us and they showed us how to find the part of that makes sense to get where we want to be.

So the combination of theory and a practical part of it is something that I really learned a lot and it's a it's a great self-reflection on my work.

You learn the academic grounding and the the basis for a lot of why we do what we do. It was fantastic - it gave me a really good theoretical grounding in the job that I do and a lot of the, you know, the academic study around that discipline. So it's been really helpful in that regard.

Because I didn't have my master's degree to get into our top companies, so I thought I had work experience practical experience and now this course, a degree is the combination that is going to really help me getting into a bigger companies and aspiring typical level positions.

There's a 20 to 21 year gap between my BA and my MA, so I was slightly worried about my capacity to study but in actual fact, what I found I was a much better student this time around. It was an advantage, an advantage in the end.

This was my first International experience so I was very scared if I would be able to fit in the environment, but I think Southampton did great it's very culturally inclusive.

The University made you feel like you are at home and it's, like, really great that they take care of you. It was a great decision for me to come here and to get a degree from a great University.

You get to gain so perspective. I mean, I feel like I've grown so much. I was not this confident before - now I feel I can achieve so many things because I've just done a postgraduate. So, yay!

Master's study as a professional footballer (with Millwall FC's Jake Cooper)

Millwall FC's Jake Cooper is studying on Solent's MSc Football Science, so he has all the skills and knowledge he needs when he retires as a player and takes a role off-pitch.

I'm Jake Cooper. I'm a professional footballer here at Millwall Football Club - I have been for eight seasons now. And I'm
studying football science at at Solent University. 

My career goals were to obviously play football and obviously I want to stay in football when I finish, so you've got to have certain experience in that and you've got to go and do the the right courses and things that lead you to the paths that you want to take in the future. And yeah our careers are only short and we have to think about what comes after football and you know when you get to a certain age I think that starts coming to your mind.

So I was more interested in the football side of things and came across the the course at Solent and um obviously it's a master's level as well so I realised that with my experience in football I could get into the course.

There are great facilities actually, that I thought when I first arrived. Test Park, the training facility, I've used the the 3G pitch there and the classrooms available. Lovely place to go and do your studies.

So I'm doing two modules at the minute. One which is on football periodisation - the breaking down of a season into periods,  into cycles and breaking down what kind of what kind of training needs are are scheduled in for that certain block. And management and leadership in football, so, you know, managing up with the the leadership side of things and then managing training schedules.

I look forward to doing my own research on things. I have a lot of things to use here at the club that I can put into some good research topics,  I think. And yeah, I'm just looking forward to working with the guys, you know. 
I'm just enjoying doing the course on on the side of playing football. the the course has been really flexible with my job. I think they understand the field I work in. And, yeah, they've changed assessment dates around for me and they've been really good at calling me from home and making sure everything's right and I'm ready for my studies. Yeah I couldn't ask for any more help from them guys.

It's been good. It's been hard work; I think a lot goes into doing it full-time - something people have to think about. But we get a lot of time after training and on the coach and in the hotel so, yeah, I think I'm getting everything out of it that I can I wish for.

I want a job in football when I retire um from playing and the physical side of the game is something that interests me a lot. It's just been about, you know, realising how much attention to detail goes into what we do on a day-to-day basis. I think what the guys look into, you know, all the performance metrics that are assessed, is something that I didn't realise before so it's been good to learn that kind of side of things.

The coaching side is coming as well but I have more interest in the physical side of things at the minute so I think this course
kind of suits that with an intention for my post career work.

I've been PFA rep um for the last few years here at Millwall and I look after the boys here and as a as a link between the PFA and and the club but, yeah, they've supported me in the studies. The PFA are great - they help all the lads who want to study they help give some funding to the to the lads and, yeah, they funded uh a good part of my course this year so you can't ask for much more help from them.

I think this course especially can lead people down all different routes in football I think. We've got analysis on their coaches and all different people which have a route they want to take after their careers and I think for players you you really get helped by the team here so it's something that they should definitely look at if they want to want a career in football still when they finish playing.

Find out about the support Solent's Student Hub provides to students

Welcome to the Student Hub. Welcome to the Student Hub. Welcome to the student Hub. We are your first point of contact for any queries relating to your course or any personal matters which may be affecting your studies. We are here to support you throughout your journey as a student and if we cannot solve your query directly we can put you in touch with the team who can. 

We can see students walking into the Student Hub and then the camera pans round to show where the Hub's location is in the Spark building. We then see a member of the team opening the door to one of the private consultation rooms and a student following her in. We then see a student using one of the phones in the phone booths.

You can find us in the Student Village at the back of the Spark. We have consultation rooms for more private conversations and phone booths which you can use to directly contact other teams around the University.

You may have something simple like an issue with your campus card, or something more complex. We know that things don't always go as planned or as expected and our friendly and experienced advisers are here to help you. So whether it's to do with your course, for example you may need advice about getting an extension on an assignment, or maybe about your wellbeing; we can discuss your options provide advice on what to do next and, if needed, refer you to other services who can help. 

We are shown leaflets of the various services available to students in the Hub, then the various rooms and facilities available to students.

We have several specialists services available from the Student Hub including our disability advice team, student funding advice services, the mental health and well-being team, a spirituality and reflection service, and our safeguarding service. We also offer specialist support and advice for students who have experienced a sexual assault or harassment, we support LGBTQ plus students, and we also are a hate crime third party reporting centre.

To complement our face-to-face services, we have various self-service functions which you can access via either the portal or Gateway, including ordering a new campus card, requesting a student status letter, booking appointments with our support services, and applying for additional University grants and bursaries. All students also have access to the Student Assistance Programme provided by PAM Wellness. This support is available 24/7 via the app or over the phone.
