Postgraduate loans – your need-to-know
Students who have applied to study a postgraduate course in England can apply for funding to cover tuition fees and living costs. It’s not assessed by income, making it more accessible for anyone looking to study at this level.
If you’re eligible, you could borrow up to £12,858 to pay for any costs associated with your studies, including accommodation and tuition fees.
Take a look at the gov.uk website to get the full run-down on postgraduate funding.
P.S., postgraduate loans aren’t available for postgraduate certificates or diplomas, as well as students who already have a qualification at master's (or higher) level.

Doctoral loans
Fancy doing a PhD or other doctoral degree but wondering about how to cover the costs? The UK Government has you covered.
Postgraduate doctoral loans are available for eligible students and can help with course fees and living costs. Whether you qualify depends on a range of factors, including your course and age. You may also be eligible for extra support if you have a disability.
Good to know: postgraduate doctoral loans are repaid at the same time as any other student loans, and interest is charged from the day the first payment is made.
Full information about funding, repayments and how to apply is available on the GOV.UK website.
Scholarships
As well as funding from the Government, scholarships are available to help UK, EU and international students to pay for their postgraduate education. Head over to our scholarships page to find out what’s available at Solent.
Other sources of postgraduate funding
A range of charities and commercial organisations run their own postgraduate bursaries. Some may require you to demonstrate eligibility by producing a written application, creating a short video, or carrying out another creative project. Others will simply require you to apply online. The Alternative Guide Online contains a database of funding opportunities, comprehensive guidance, and numerous tools to help you prepare a grant application. The Guide is free to use for all students and staff with a Solent log-in. If you are a prospective student who has applied to the University, drop us an email on research.admissions@solent.ac.uk to request a PIN to give you access to this resource.
Are you an international student? You might be eligible for funding through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.
