Graduate stories

Sophie's story

Sophie Mahmud - Freelance Designer

What made you choose to study at Solent?
The course was different, fun and the only one in the country. It allowed me to study graphic design with fashion (which were both subjects I felt passionately about). I loved my course and my time there and I'm super sad it's over. The uni is so modern and it's a lovely place to study.

What was the best part of your course?
The variety of units! I've left Solent with way more skills than I ever thought I'd have.

What do you do now and what do you find most enjoyable about your work?
I freelance from home. I was able to get work in my second year and I've carried this on. My biggest achievement is working with the likes of Asos, Topman, Topshop, LAMODA, and Skinnydip, making some great connections along the way.

What are the most important skills you've learnt and how did you change as a person at Solent?

  • Technical skills: I learned to use Illustrator from scratch.
  • Confidence in my own work.
  • Determination and hard work. Nothing comes for free; I've worked hard to get the freelance roles I did and have worked with great brands as a result of that.

Having studied at Solent, I've grown up, become more responsible and I'm more organised as a person. Uni has made me open to new things in my career as well as my general life.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of studying at Solent?
Go for it. If you have a passion don't let it go. I didn't plan to go to university but I took the risk over an apprenticeship and I don't regret it!
