Fashion is a huge, fast-changing and culturally influential industry – shaping not just the clothes we wear but also the society we live in. And that’s the power of fashion journalism – communicating the latest trends and developments from the industry to a world hungry for innovation.

Solent University’s Journalism, Publishing and Public Relations subject area was ranked 17th in the Guardian University League Tables 2019.

This course offers you the skills to be an essential part of this dynamic industry, planning, creating and distributing fashion content across online and offline platforms to a global audience.

You will develop not only your ability to research, write, interview and broadcast, but also design, produce and publish content for a range of formats, from magazines to online. You’ll build skills and understanding of photography and filmmaking, becoming the kind of multi-skilled operator who can meet any kind of industry need.

And you’ll have the chance to specialise, as live briefs from the industry – and internships with industry partners – give you that essential hands-on experience that can get you in the door. Plus through practical assignments, internships and wider work placements, you will graduate with a stunning and creative professional portfolio of work.

Our course team’s extensive industry contacts – and our growing alumni network – are what makes it all happen. Past students have had the opportunity to build their experience at many of the top fashion and beauty titles in the UK and overseas, including Elle, Esquire, Dazed, Cosmo, and SHOWstudio.

Some also assist top PR agencies who work with major influencers and celebrities, representing clients at London Fashion Week, and organising incredible launch events, while our alumni also work for fashion brands on content and social media strategy. With journalism and PR working more closely than ever, employers really value a solid understanding of both of these skillsets. 

Fashion is a truly international industry, and recently students have enjoyed a number of trips, travelling to iconic fashion capitals including Paris, Milan and New York to visit publication houses, exhibitions, fashion archives and attend press events.

With a degree in fashion journalism, you’ll have a range of career opportunities – whether you want to cover the catwalk and trends for a fashion and lifestyle magazine, or work on the social media strategy and communications department of a top fashion brand. As well as travel, beauty and lifestyle publishing and the wider fashion and beauty industries.

Who is this course for?

Candidates for this fashion journalism programme should be passionate about the subject and confident in their communication and language skills. Students will also work in a range of mediums, so prior knowledge of multimedia production and digital publishing would be an advantage.

The tuition fees for the 2020/21 academic year are:

Bursaries and scholarships

Solent University offers a range of bursaries and scholarships that provide financial assistance or waive fees for tuition or accommodation. Each bursary or scholarship has specific eligibility criteria. Check out our bursaries and scholarships pages to find out more.

Graduation costs

For graduates in 2020, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket was £15 in 2019, but this fee is subject to change for future years. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

96 - 112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at MMM or BTEC Diploma at DM or equivalent qualification, or a combination of qualifications which comply with the minimum entry requirement of 96 UCAS points.
  • Direct entry into the second or third years may be considered for this course.
  • Applicants over the age of 21 may be considered based on relevant experience, without having the required tariff points.
  • Alternative entry to this course is available through the Foundation Year in Journalism, Advertising and Marketing.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

During the course, you’ll learn how to use a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art video, TV, photography and online equipment, as well as a variety of industry-standard software design packages. You will also have access to our professional-quality media centre, featuring TV and audio broadcast studios, dedicated photography studios and more.

We provide a stimulating learning environment and access to state-of-the-art resources to help you make the most of your time with us. Flexible spaces, Wi-Fi facilities and learning zones all contribute to our lively and contemporary study environment at Solent.

The curriculum is built around practical insights into the fashion and beauty industry. Previous students have benefitted from access to live client projects and prestigious guest speakers such as Darren Styles OBE, publisher of Attitude magazine.

Work experience is an essential part of the degree and is an assessed unit in the third year. Students are supported and guided in sourcing their own work placements throughout the course, with more than one week's work experience per academic year in years two and three strongly recommended.

Students are also able to participate in industry practice during the course, through access to external organisations or in live practical briefs.
