Are you an avid reader of fashion magazines and blogs? Would you like the skills to produce engaging fashion and beauty content for them? Maybe you’d love a career on the PR side, working with famous fashion influencers and celebrities, luxury or high street fashion and beauty brands?

Solent University’s Journalism, Publishing and Public Relations subject area was ranked 17th in the Guardian University League Tables 2019.

This multi-media and promotional communications degree will support you to develop the skills to write great articles, produce creative PR campaigns, create photography and fashion films, and craft eye-catching magazine or digital designs – helping to kick-start an exciting career.

We know how important it is to you to secure a meaningful career when you leave university and support you to gain valuable experience, working on a host of real client projects, giving you the confidence and knowledge to start up your own successful blogs, magazines and other creative businesses.  

Through our course team’s extensive industry contacts and growing alumni network, students have the opportunity to enjoy exciting internships and work experience across many of the top fashion and beauty titles in the UK and overseas – these have previously included Vogue, Elle, Esquire, Dazed and Cosmo.  Some also assist top PR agencies who work with major influencers and celebrities, representing clients at London Fashion Week, and organising incredible launch events.   With journalism and PR working more closely than ever, employers really value a solid understanding of both of these skillsets. 

Fashion is a truly international  industry, and recently students have enjoyed a number of trips, travelling to iconic fashion capitals including Paris, Milan and  New York to visit publication houses, exhibitions, fashion archives and attend press events.

With a degree in fashion journalism, you’ll have a range of career opportunities – whether you want to cover the catwalk for a national magazine or website, or work in the communications department of a top fashion house, as well as leisure, publishing and fashion industries.

Who is this course for?

Candidates for this fashion journalism programme should be passionate about the subject and confident in their communication and language skills. Students will also work in a range of mediums, so prior knowledge of multimedia production and digital publishing would be an advantage.

96 - 112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at MMM or BTEC Diploma at DM or equivalent qualification, or a combination of qualifications which comply with the minimum entry requirement of 96 UCAS points.
  • Direct entry into the second or third years may be considered for this course.
  • Applicants over the age of 21 may be considered based on relevant experience, without having the required tariff points.
  • Alternative entry to this course is available through the Foundation Year in Journalism, Advertising and Marketing.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

Your application should reach UCAS by 15 January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until the end of June. The UCAS code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

The university cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.


During the course you’ll learn how to use a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art video and TV, photography and online equipment, as well as a variety of industry-standard software design packages.

We provide a stimulating learning environment and access to state-of-the-art resources to help you make the most of your time with us. Flexible spaces, Wi-Fi facilities and learning zones all contribute to our lively and contemporary study environment at Solent.

The curriculum is built around practical insights into the fashion and beauty industry. Previous students have benefitted from access to live client projects and prestigious guest speakers such as Darren Styles OBE, publisher of Attitude magazine.

The course team has strong contacts in the fashion press and the wider industry, with magazines providing work placements and internships. You’ll also have access to industry professionals who teach on the course as associate lecturers, research fellows or as part of our weekly guest speaker programme. 

Our industry guest lecturers have recently included internationally acclaimed fashion commentator, Colin McDowell; fashion author, Dr Agnes Rocamora; fashion critic, Dr Monica Titton and blogger / beauty writer, Jane Cunningham (British Beauty Blog), Italian fashion photographer Nicol Vizioli and Terri Waters  founder of ‘The Unedit’, and the founders of leading ethical fashion title, Sublime Magazine - Dr Laura and Damian Santamaria.

We have industry evenings and live broadcast panel events, with contributions from students and industry professionals, and you’ll also be encouraged to attend or enter industry competitions and events.


You’ll have access to a variety of work placement opportunities through the course team’s strong ties with the industry, as well as working to live briefs through our advertising and design agency, Solent Creatives.

You’ll also have the opportunity to complete a work placement as part of your third-year studies, working on local and national news and magazines.
