About the course

Transport is a quickly evolving branch of engineering. Demand for faster, more fuel-efficient, greener vehicles with advanced control systems in all modes of transport means that vehicle design will change considerably over the next decades. This course will help you expand your knowledge of the key science and engineering principles behind a range of vehicles. You’ll also build the skills to develop and analyse designs in a quickly changing market.

The course will provide you with a solid grounding in the fundamentals of engineering. You’ll then develop the specialist knowledge required to work on the design and analysis of road vehicles, marine vehicles and rail vehicles. You’ll also explore the supporting technology, such as automation, control systems and advanced technology. And using contemporary software, techniques and materials, you’ll be supported in developing the analytical skills and practical engineering design skills that are sought after in this fast-growing industry.

You’ll study the key concepts underpinning the design of vehicles, ranging from yachts and powerboats to trains and supercars. Along with this you’ll explore some of the technology behind advanced systems, such as automation and control, and advanced materials, including carbon fibre composites.

You’ll also learn about the important environmental aspects of future transport engineering and green transport design. This will help you respond to the challenge of making transport more environmentally friendly as emissions targets continue to increase.

Learning is hands-on, with a mix of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. You’ll have full access to our engineering laboratories which include an advanced manufacturing and robotics workshop, composite material laboratory, CAD suites and towing tank.

What does this course lead to?

The course covers a range of transport types: road vehicles, yachts and boats, and trains. Graduates will be well-equipped to work in a number of sectors within the transport industry, providing flexibility in the job market and the opportunity to specialise in automotive, marine or rail.

Suitable roles for graduates include automotive design engineer, motorsports engineer, rail engineer, and working in small craft design or manufacture.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2020/21 academic year are:
UK and EU full-time fees: £9,250 per year
International full-time fees: £13,260 per year
UK and EU part-time fees: £4,625 per year

Graduation costs

For graduates in 2020, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket was £15 in 2019, but this fee is subject to change for future years. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

96 - 112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • From two or more A-levels (including one STEM subject), BTEC Extended Diploma at DMM or BTEC Diploma at D*D* in a STEM based subject or equivalent, which comply with the minimum entry requirement of 96 UCAS points.
  • Direct entry into year two or three may be considered for this course.
  • Alternative entry is available through the Science and Engineering Foundation Year.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

The university cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.


As a student on Solent’s future transport engineering programme, you’ll have full access to the University’s fully-equipped engineering facilities, including CAD suites and electronics and control laboratories.

The advanced manufacturing and robotics laboratory houses 3D printers and laser cutting machines, as well as a Baxter industrial robot system.

The advanced composites laboratory is designed to handle all of the processes commonly seen in composite construction, including pre-impregnated fibre construction and resin infusion.

For students working on the design of marine transport, Solent’s 60m towing tank enables the evaluation of hydrodynamic lift and drag components.

The course is based on underpinning engineering and scientific principles and covers a range of transport types: road, yachts and boats, and trains, with the opportunity to specialise in one area.

The course team has strong links across the key areas in the UK transport industry. High profile yacht engineering graduates include Vendee Globe sailor, Mike Golding and Paralympic sailor, Helena Lucas.

Students on other engineering courses have taken part in a guest lecture with the Red Bull Racing F1 team, with more planned for the future.

The University has also undertaken RSSB-funded research looking at railway wheel condition monitoring.


The course does not contain a compulsory work placement. Students will be encouraged to find appropriate work experience outside of teaching weeks.
