About the course

Are you hoping to pursue a career in the fast-paced world of international business? Southampton Solent University’s international business management programme can help you to gain experience of different languages, cultures and business environments, turning you into a well-rounded and globally aware business graduate.

Real industry insight is at the heart of Southampton Solent University’s international business management programme. The course team maintain strong relationships with industry professionals, which have previously lead to unique guest lectures, live assessment briefs, and work experience placements for business students.

Students are also guided as they write a dissertation, carrying out in-depth research into a relevant business area. Students use the analytics skills learnt throughout the course to inform this research, and are encouraged to focus on an area that they think they might like to work in after graduation.

In the second year, students are encouraged to spend all or half the academic year on study placement with one of our partner institutions in Austria, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden or the Netherlands, learning business and language-related subjects. You’ll usually be taught in English, but students with good enough languages skills may find it helpful to study in the local language.

Think your business idea could be the next big thing? Southampton Solent’s enterprise centre is dedicated to helping student entrepreneurs achieve success. They have previously provided support in the form of funding, office space, mentoring and guidance.

  • As well as giving me a degree and fantastic memories, the international business management course gave me all of the business skills and knowledge to work and succeed in the global business world. During my year abroad I made contacts and gained international exposure and experience which added value to both my personal and professional lives.

  • The highly knowledgeable and supportive lecturers contributed to our understanding of international business by sharing their industry experience and setting up assignments that used real case studies. Through applying theory to practice and developing my employability skills, I felt much more prepared for ‘life after university’. I also appreciated the interactive nature of the classes.

Graduate stories

Jaber's story

Jaber Amari - Middle East Regional Office General Manager

I graduated from Solent’s BA (Hons) International Business Management course in 2009. I then undertook an MSc in risk management.

Shortly after graduating I was hired as a sales person. Within three years I was hired by an international company as their Middle East regional office general manager. Their regional office started in Saudi Arabia in 2011, and I took over in 2014. I have already been able to expand among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and we are now heading to Africa.

I am writing to you to let you know that I attribute most of my success to my tutors at Solent. The way I was dealt with was so professional, it helped me learn how to be professional myself. I learnt how to deal with other cultures, which helped me a lot in convincing my employer that I was the right candidate. I also learnt how to work with colleagues who I did not necessarily enjoy working with – making the most of their capabilities despite our differences.

My reports are presented to the board of directors of our parent company in the U.S., where they are still being adapted and benchmarked. I learnt a lot about how to write reports from my dissertation supervisor – knowledge which has proved invaluable.

Thank you big time!
