About the course

This exciting and contemporary course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to progress to a broad range of marketing jobs. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of marketing theory, study key concepts of consumer behaviour and insight, marketing strategy, effective marketing planning and decision making, marketing communications and creative digital technologies.

Along with a comprehensive understanding of sport promotion and business covering sport brands, sport sponsorship and engaging global audiences, you will learn to use digital and social media alongside traditional marketing and business techniques.

And the unique nature of sport marketing is reflected in highly specialist units. In Sport Broadcasting and Media, you will uncover the symbiotic relationship between media and sport, the direct and indirect consumption of sport and the emergence of virtual sports. Sport Sponsorship and Events explores sport businesses and the marketing of products and services through sport. And in Globalisation and Internationalisation of Sport Business Management, you will critically analyse the regional and international marketing contexts of sport, including the emergence of Asian markets.

But the course also has a strong focus on employability – developing your practical habits and professional skills through work-related opportunities such as live client briefs and real-world projects at all levels. As Southampton Football Club’s official education partner, the university has a close working relationship with the club – and you will also benefit from guest lectures by industry experts, networking activities such as our annual Meet the Professionals event, and more.

Other opportunities include international student events. Solent University is the only UK university to be part of International Marketing Week and the Intensive Project network, giving you invaluable opportunities to work in Europe with international students on live marketing or advertising projects with multinational organisations such as Mercedes-Benz.

And you also have the option to undertake additional qualifications, such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) professional qualifications, the Institute of Data and Marketing (IDM) Certificate, the Adobe Creative Suite certification and Target Group Index (TGI) certification.

If you apply for this course with a placement year, you have the opportunity to undertake a year in industry between your second and third years.

Optional costs

CIM: Students looking to gain a module award towards the CIM Certificate in Professional Marketing will have additional CIM costs (annual student membership fees and exam fees), which are also subject to change and are payable directly to the CIM.

IDM certification: Current cost is £120 (exam fee) partially offset by access to bursary grant funding.

Trips, agency visits and international travel may have additional costs.

Graduation costs

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2018, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

96 - 112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at MMM or BTEC Diploma at DM or equivalent qualification, or a combination of qualifications which comply with the minimum entry requirement of 96 UCAS points.
  • Direct entry into year two or three may be considered for this course.
  • Alternative entry to the course is available through the Foundation Year in Journalism, Advertising and Marketing.
  • If you are applying from outside the UK, find information about entry requirements, visas and agents for your country here.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.

Facilities

You will have full access to our library, open 24 hours at peak times and offering computer resource centres, bookable study spaces and a wide range of online and physical materials. You will also benefit from the use of dedicated Mac suites, Adobe’s Creative Cloud suite, and MarkStrat marketing simulation software – as well as dedicated academic support and career development services.

In addition to the key marketing principles, sport specific units include sport broadcasting and media, sport sponsorship and events, and globalisation and internationalisation.

Industry links

The course team has strong links with industry at a local, regional and national level. We have a well-respected weekly guest lecture programme where leading industry professionals visit the university to talk about various areas of current industry practice. We hold regular trips to agencies, and a number of units benefit from live client briefs and industry partners working with the students on projects and assessments. Our annual Meet the Professionals event gives students the opportunity to chat face-to-face with former graduates who have established successful careers in the industry and come back to share their experience with current students.

CIM

The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). The curriculum is closely aligned to the CIM and provides the benefit of two exemptions for the CIM Certificate in Professional Marketing and one exemption for the Diploma in Professional Marketing. These allow the student to take the minimum of additional examinations to obtain a CIM qualification while they study.

IDM Certificate in Direct and Digital Marketing (Cert DDM)

Based on the syllabus provided by the Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM), your Direct and Digital Marketing unit has been approved and endorsed by the IDM.  This unit gives you direct access to contemporary industry collateral and the opportunity to gain the IDM professional certificate.

The Institute of Data and Marketing (IDM) powers the learning offering of the Data & Marketing Association. The Certificate is designed to give you the opportunity to gain an industry recognised professional qualification whilst at university. Providing you with the key knowledge that will help you hit the ground running in your first marketing job and give you a head-start on your professional learning journey.

You can also obtain the Target Group Index (TGI) certification run by Kantar Media.

Placements

Work experience is an essential part of the degree and is assessed at year two (level 5) and year three (level 6) of the programme. Students are expected to source their own work placements, with support and guidance from the course team and the University’s careers service, Solent Futures. The minimum requirement varies, but is not less than 1 week's work experience per academic year.

During the course you will also have the option to carry out a work placement year, offering you the opportunity to gain valuable work experience before going on to your final year of study.

As part of the Employability and Work Placement Skills at the end of the second year (L5), students must complete two separate two-week work experience placements during the summer break between year two (L5) and year three (L6). Support is provided by the unit leader and Solent Futures.

Students are able to participate in industry practice during the course. This can be either in external organisations such as suitable media, communications, media or press offices, or based within the University’s Solent Press or Solent Creatives agencies.
