Solent University is well known for being a creative university, so this summer we're offering a variety of art, design and fashion short courses to help you explore your creative side.

So whether you're interested in visual merchandising, hair braiding or preparing for studying a creative masters degree, you'll find a short course to suit you.

Each short course is taught by a range of industry professionals and will be held on our city centre campus in the heart of Southampton giving you access to the latest in art, design and fashion equipment.

Introduction to visual merchandising for small businesses

About this course

In a challenging marketplace, retail businesses need to stand out amongst the competition. Good visual merchandising helps retail businesses to create eye catching and appealing places for customers to shop. 

This course is an introduction to the basic principles of visual merchandising that can be applied to a variety of business environments – from product based retail (eg fashion, lifestyle, food) to service industries (eg hairdressing, restaurants). Areas covered will include window design, interior layouts, customer flow, visual branding, graphics and lighting. 

Attendees will work on quick fixes and longer term solutions for the presentation of their businesses. This will be worked on using case studies to demonstrate both successes and challenges. Workshop techniques will be used to build practical, creative ideas that can be taken back to the business and implemented after the course.  

The University’s own store, Re:So, will be used for a guided floorwalk to explore layout, adjacencies and zoning.

Advanced hair braiding (age 14+)

About this course

On this advanced hair-braiding course you will learn the key techniques for creating fashion trend to festival hairstyles using braids consisting from 3 to 11 strands.

You will learn to master a series of techniques including waterfall, rope braid, knot braid, 11 strand, hair wefting and more.

You will produce a style on a model, which will be photographed for your portfolio. You will have the option to bring your own make-up to construct a finished look.

The course includes:

Who is this course for?

This is a one day course for beginners (age 14+) who have an interest in this subject area and a desire to learn advanced hair braiding techniques, as well as hairdressers who want to update their skillset.

Airbrushing (for make-up) key stage 1

About this course

On this one day airbrushing course you will learn the key techniques for creating flawless coverage by minimising skin imperfections while giving skin a beautiful natural finish look, resulting an water resistant foundation that will last up to 15 hours or more.

This high definition make-up is great for those interested in bridal, beauty and fashion make-up – both professional and amateur. At the end of the course you will gain a professional airbrushing certificate in recognition of the skills achieved.

The course includes:

  • Skin and skincare, including health and safety
  • Working with air brush compressors
  • Gaining confidence with all aspects using and maintaining airbrushing equipment and products
  • Skin tone / foundation selection and application
  • Corrective make-up techniques
  • Cheek colour application
  • Contouring techniques
  • Troubleshooting.

Who is this course for?

This is a one day course for those who have an interest in make-up and a desire to learn airbrushing techniques for the face, but have no previous professional experience in airbrushing.

Fashion styling and beauty direction for 16 – 18 year olds

About this course

Styling and image direction is an exciting and important part of the fashion industry. Understanding styling and beauty for fashion, from seasonal trends, magazines to photography and make-up. This course will introduce you to creating a fashion and beauty image, analysing contemporary magazine shoots and working as part of a creative team.

You will look at the importance of image styling in digital contemporary fashion media. Understanding the history and role of a stylist; looking at emerging trends and advertisements that utilise varying media, whilst analysing the impact fashion branding and aesthetic identity has on producing contemporary fashion and beauty imagery.

By the end of the course you will have directed, styled and produced varying photoshoots that can build upon your digital portfolio.

This will allow you to produce creative projects that can form part of your portfolio for potential further study.

Materials (Please bring with you to the first session):

  • 1 x Fashion Magazine
  • Pen, Small Pack of Colouring Pencils & Notebook
  • Memory stick / hard drive.
  • Personal laptop (this is not essential but if you do have a laptop please bring it along)

By the end of the week the students will have produced:

  • Mood board images and idea proposals (Mini presentations)
  • Fashion portfolio images
  • Beauty portfolio images
  • Two prints of their best work.

Developing research and academic writing skills: preparation for postgraduate study in art, design and fashion

About this course

This five day course is aimed at international and UK students who have been offered a place on, or are thinking of applying to a masters course in the area of art, design and fashion. The course is designed to strengthen skills and knowledge in academic research and writing.

This course is designed to enable to students to begin masters study feeling more confident in, and prepared for, the academic requirements of studying at postgraduate level, particularly the research and writing requirements that may not have been a large component of undergraduate study.

Over the duration of the week students will receive guidance and support in undertaking primary and secondary research; be made aware of a range of research methodologies; undertake a small literature review; engage in object analysis; film analysis and visual analysis. The course will culminate in students working on a group presentation as well as producing an individual piece of academic writing with referencing.

The course is designed to be informative, enjoyable and to build confidence helping students to feel prepared for the rigour of masters study. Students will be supported by experienced academics as well as subject librarians and in addition they will be invited to the private view of the 2019 masters degree show at the Showcase Gallery on Tuesday 10 September. The course will not be formally assessed, though the students will receive feedback throughout.

This course is designed for postgraduate students who have accepted a place on MA Creative Direction for Fashion and Beauty, MA Visual CommunicationMA Critical Creative Practice or any art, design and fashion masters from September 2019.
