During this talk, Charles Umney will seek to restate and reformulate core Marxian theory around class as an important alternative to the way the concept is typically treated both in public discourse and much current sociological research. In particular, the seminar will focus on the idea of 'precarious work' - which has attracted huge interest but often remains ill defined - and consider how it relates to class theory. It will use the concept of class discipline to explore, and try to resolve these tensions.
