Students from BA (Hons) Marketing with Sport were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of St Mary’s Stadium as part of a guest lecture which kicked off their marketing principles unit.

Southampton FC's partnerships executive led a tour of the stadium which included a visit to the changing rooms, warm-up room, media interview areas and conference room, before getting a player’s eye view of the pitch. The students learned how the club develops programmes for sponsors, how they work with the media and how they developed their new brand architecture, values and beliefs of the club.

What I found really interesting was finding out how the sponsorship packages work and how they attract and retain fans.

The visit brought the sport marketing mix to life and helped students understand how the club utilise data to personalise communications to fans at home and worldwide and prepare quarterly reports for their sponsors.

Commenting on the visit Richard Berry, Head of Marketing and Communications at Solent, said: "Today provided a great opportunity for our students to discover how marketing principles are applied at a Premier League club. For students these activities can really help to enrich their learning experience and in turn time at the University. We are fortunate to have such a close working relationship with the club that in turn benefits our student community."

The visit forms part of a broader engagement programme with the Club that sees staff from Southampton FC share their skills and expertise with Solent students.
