Student blogger, Elena tell us how she has adapted to being back at home in her parents' house during the coronavirus pandemic.

30th April 2020

Today exactly marks the fourth week since I had left university and returned to my parents’ home. The things I have gained since leaving university are: more precious family time, 4kg in weight and some really questionable sleeping patterns.

My name is Elena, a second, going into third year student of BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science. I am actively involved with the University in a variety of aspects, such as being a student ambassador, a course rep and the vice-president of the Climbing Society. Moving back home was a no-brainer. There was nothing keeping me tied to staying in Southampton since the unfortunate, but sensible, closure of the University. I would have felt isolated in a tiny room all day with very minimal face-to-face human interaction and that contact is a big necessity for me.

Continuing with my studies at home has been a blessing and a curse. I am surrounding by my mom’s delicious cooking every night and an unlimited number of savoury snacks. I have gone from eating one instant meal a day to three generous meals. Before at university, every day would be different and I always found myself busy, from attending study sessions, sports societies, to working in the lab, and meeting up with friends. Now the most I do in terms of exercise is walk from my chair to the fridge. I am lucky for the fact that my family has some gym equipment and I have tried to get the yoga mat out and do some exercise, but for me, I had always found the gym boring and preferred doing sports. My fitness levels have plummeted since leaving university. I went for a spontaneous run the other day for the first time in ages and after a solid minute, I was knackered and dying to get back to the comfort of my home.

I personally found the transition to studying at home relatively easy. Despite the constant distractions around me, such as the TV always playing, my brother playing League of Legends day and night, and the constant need to check the biscuit bin for more food; the actual studying aspect is straightforward once I start. I was previously worried about the possibility of losing that feeling of being a student at university and despite university being so far away, I feel closer than ever. My professors have been amazingly supportive and accessible. Moreover, any queries I may have, I am confident that they can answer. In times like these, it is vital to stay connected and not lose touch of reality.

My good friend Monet, a fellow third year international student at Solent has been staying with me at my parents’ home because the flights back to Japan right now have been complicated and expensive. I am lucky in the sense that I have a friend with me during isolation and company of my brother. I celebrated my 21st birthday yesterday and it most certainly been a memorable one.

The foreseeable future is unclear, and it can be worrying, but for now I am taking each day in my stride.
