An A-Z of 'Amazing Occupations'

For her final major project, illustration student Aimee Paddick, aged 22 from Southampton, created an A to Z  of Amazing Occupations. The colourful children’s book – which  illustrates the wonderful world of work – won the Unsinkable Press Award for best publication and Aimee was awarded a first class honours degree.

In the book, Wisdom the worm takes the readers through the alphabet of occupations – from bin men to xenobiologists. We caught up  with Aimee to find out more about her project; the inspiration behind it; and her plans for the future.

What was the idea behind Amazing Occupations

My goal was to create a children’s book that would be both fun and informative. I have always been interested and amazed by how many jobs there are out there. I wanted to give the readers an idea of how fun all jobs can be, and why is it so important to find the one you love.

What’s next for you? Tell us a bit about your plans for the future.

I will continue with illustration alongside my new job at a balloon company and some of my course mates and I have discussed having exhibitions in the future.

I would like to take a year out of education to travel and work in the real world of illustration, however I am also considering applying for a masters next year in children’s book illustration.

What have you enjoyed most about your time at Solent?

I’ve really enjoyed the opportunities we have had throughout the course and all of the exciting and inspirational people we’ve met along the way. I’ve had my first commission – a children’s trail for Southampton Art Gallery – and contributed to an exhibition that will be shown in Shanghai.

What would be your advice for students just about to start their higher education journey?

Work as hard as you possibly can, be open to advice, and take every opportunity that comes your way!
