Catching up with business graduate, Louise O'Sullivan
We caught up with graduate associate Louise O’Sullivan. We speak to her about how she got into the role and where she will go next.
What is your role within Sport Solent?
I am a Graduate Associate in Business, Finance and Administration.
What have your academic and professional journeys been so far and where do you foresee it leading you?
After sixth form, I came to Southampton Solent University to study BA (Hons) Business Management, within my degree I learnt all about how to manage a business and the many fields business encompasses, from that point I knew my passion lay within Business Finance.
I decided to apply for the Southampton Solent Graduate Associate Scheme, because it allowed me to get some invaluable work experience whilst I studied for my MSc in Management. I was thrilled to be offered the position with Sport Solent as I love sports and think it’s a great industry to be part of.
Since starting at Sport Solent I have had many opportunities to learn and develop my skills, and am currently getting my PRINCE2 qualifications in Project Management alongside my Masters. Sport Solent have supported my learning fantastically and I am very grateful for the opportunities I have been given to develop personally and professionally.
The graduate scheme is sadly only for 1 year and beyond this I am moving into another graduate position with IBM as a Strategy Consultant, a role I would not have been lucky enough to get if it hadn’t been for the help and support I have received at Sport Solent.
What is the best bit of advice you have ever heard?
Push yourself because nobody else is going to do it for you.
What do you think of the range of working opportunities available for students at Sport Solent and Southampton Solent University?
I think the opportunities for students to work alongside Sport Solent are phenomenal, there are a range of positions and roles which students can apply for and be part of which provide a great chance for students to get out in the real world and develop their skills. I am currently undertaking a project to develop the work experience approach offered to students looking to coach and volunteer, which has shown me the vast amount of work the coach development and schools teams do to provide students with the an extensive range opportunities to gain experience.
On a larger scale the University itself offers some brilliant roles and work experience opportunities, such as the Graduate Associate Scheme and the Business Scheme. Similarly roles such as Student Ambassadors and JobShop Staff are great on CV’s!
If you had to be trapped in a lift with anyone famous who would it be?
Angelina Jolie… Woman Crush!!
What is your sport?
Lacrosse, I have played since I was 11 years old and it is great fun, as well as being a brilliant stress release!!
What have you enjoyed the most working in the sport and leisure industry so far?
The most enjoyable part of working at Sport Solent is being part of such a fantastic, fun team! With regards to the industry, the most rewarding factor is knowing you are working towards something which will positively impact a large number of people.
