Abhiraj progressed onto LLM Intellectual Property Law and Professional Legal Practice after studying LLB at Solent University. He has made the most of the internship opportunity on his LLM course to learn and develop skills ready for his future career. We caught up with him to find out how he was finding his postgraduate experience.

Why did you decide to do a postgraduate course?

I chose this course because I wanted to learn the practical side of intellectual property law so I would be more prepared for the day-to-day life of working in a law firm. I was initially looking at other universities to do a master’s course in however, when I found out that the Solent master’s course had an alumni discount, along with the familiarity of the lecturers, it was a straightforward decision.

What’s the best thing about your course lecturers?

From the course leader’s connections, I was able to gain work experience at an intellectual property law firm from the beginning of October onwards.

How does your postgraduate course differ from your undergraduate studies?

There is practical and independent work being done, compared to undergraduate. For example, a lesson can involve doing research about a topic and then presenting it to a class, which builds up my knowledge and confidence in speaking.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned so far?

I have learnt about how to handle file trademark forms and opposition forms. Moreover, I have taken part in mediations and essentially learned how to handle a dispute verbally.

Do you feel like your studies are helping you prepare for a career in the industry?

I think learning about how to handle situations such as mediations and speaking to clients has helped me prepare for my career in the future. Moreover, the connections I have made from the course has given me career opportunities.

Can you talk a bit about your work experience?

I have gained experience of what it is like to work in a law firm. I have written articles for the firm’s website, compared similar trademarks to our clients and responded with suggested actions, filed trademark forms and invoices as well as handling time sensitive matters.
