About the course

If you need to be able to deliver operational plans, lead teams, manage change and resources and achieve operational or departmental objectives as part of your organisation’s strategy, this apprenticeship is for you.

Designed for new managers and leaders looking to develop their skills at managing a team, the apprenticeship incorporates the latest knowledge from the L5 Diploma from the Chartered Management Institute through taught sessions at our Southampton campus – then gives you the chance to put your new knowledge into practice in your own workplace, tailoring your skills to your organisation’s unique characteristics and culture, and honing the behaviours required to achieve the apprenticeship.

As and apprentice you pay no course fees, with costs covered by your employer’s apprenticeship levy (and SMEs paying only 5% of the full course cost). Over 24 months you will study the units from the Chartered Management Institute through fortnightly face-to-face study sessions, building up a network of peers from a wide range of organisations and industries – and building a strong foundation of management experience to help you work towards Chartered Manager status in the future.

Your employer will allow you 20% of your working week to develop yourself, while you can applying what you have learnt back in the workplace, guided by your tutors in conjunction with your employer.

This course is an apprenticeship, which is a course that is a blend of study and work. All apprentices must be in employment.

The apprenticeship teaching team are experienced both in industry and in academia, and are ideally placed to support apprentices on their learning journey.

This apprenticeship is an essential step in your management career, helping build a strong foundation for a future career and laying a clear pathway to Chartered Manager status and senior management positions.

Who is this course for?

This apprenticeship is developed for professionals from a wide range of industries and organisations, who are new to management or looking to develop their existing skills with the latest theory and thinking. Roles may include: operations manager, regional manager, divisional manager, department manager and specialist managers.

Tuition fees

Businesses with an annual payroll above £3million will be classed as a levy paying employer and will be able to use funds accrued in their digital apprenticeship service (DAS) account for payment of the training. Please contact us for guidance on fees if you are a non-levy employer which will cover at least 95% of the costs. 

The programme cost for 2021/22 is £7,000.

Graduation costs

For graduates in 2020, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket was £15 in 2019, but this fee is subject to change for future years. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

    GCSE English and maths are required to pass through the gateway assessment; if they are not held at the start of the course, the apprentice must complete them with our functional skills support partner.

What you'll study

Core modules

  • Principles of Management and Leadership in an Organisational Context
    You will start of this module by learning about the internal environment of an organisation, that is, the impact that legal status has on it (whether it is a limited company, a partnership etc.) and what they consist of. 
  • Principles of Developing, Managing and Leading Individuals and Teams to Achieve Success
    The module opens by focusing on the theoretical and practical approaches to developing, leading, and managing teams (remote or multidisciplinary).
  • Managing Stakeholder Relationships
    The content of this module will enable you to take a long hard look at business relationships which will be useful not only in your workplace; collaborative working and developing lasting relationships in any aspect is a lifelong skill.
  • Managing Projects to Achieve Results
    This is a great module for improving your organisation and planning skills. It focuses on what you need to know and be able to do to manage projects successfully and overcome problems and challenges.
  • Managing Change
    Many of the tools and techniques that you have encountered to date will be really helpful in the context of managing change – this will help you to recognise and re-apply models and theoretical approaches, and give you a specific context within which to explore leadership.  
  • Creating and Delivering Operational Plans
    The module opens with enabling you to understand the strategic direction of the organisation, how important that is and how it contributes to the strategic planning process.
  • Managing Finance
    This module has been designed to enhance your confidence and credibility in financial management, which in turn will help to improve your management skills.
  • Reflective Practice for Personal and Professional Development
    You will learn how to reflect on performance;  it is one of those skills that we do in everyday life as a matter of course – often thinking about how a situation went, why is happened that way, what you could do about it next time – that is the process of reflective practice.  

Achievement of all of these plus CPD, a portfolio of evidence, L2 English and Maths and endorsement from the employer are all required to be able to complete the End Point Assessment and gain the apprenticeship certificate.

You’ll have access to our 24-hour library, comfortable study spaces, large computer resource centres and our comprehensive suite of academic and personal support services.

Fortnightly study sessions on campus means that what has been explored one week can be put into practice the next, while having 20% of your working time set aside for study-related activity gives you the space and freedom to thoroughly explore the subject area, research deeper, or consider the applications of theory in your organisation or workplace.
