About the course

Are you passionate about performing arts? Looking for a route on to a full-time performance degree? The Performance Foundation Year will help you take your first step into higher education. You’ll be helped to broaden your knowledge, identify your hidden talents, and make an informed decision about your chosen pathway to one of our performance degree programmes.

The Performance Foundation Year enables you to undertake a programme of study, while fully integrating into a higher education environment. As well as practical elements, you’ll also develop the academic skills to enable to you progress on to a full undergraduate degree.

A career in the performing arts demands versatility. The broad-based nature of this foundation year offers you the opportunity to identify your skills, talents and areas of specialism, enabling you to choose the right pathway to realise your potential.

You’ll also gain broad practical experience and develop your skills in a range of performance areas. You’ll be Introduced to performance skills including acting techniques, screen acting, singing, dance, physical theatre, stage combat, mask, and clowning, helping you to identify preferential areas for further study.

You’ll be taught by an academic team with a variety of national and international industry backgrounds. They can provide well-informed, real world examples related to the subjects taught. You’ll be immersed in a balanced and stimulating programme of study that combines practical with theory. This means you’ll have plenty of opportunity to develop your academic and practical skills.

This course provides a direct pathway into either the BA (Hons) Musical Theatre or BA (Hons) Acting and Performance undergraduate degrees, depending on which area you wish to specialise in.

This course is ideal for students looking for an alternative route on to a full-time performance degree, or for those who didn’t quite get the grades to go straight into undergraduate study.

Tuition fees

The 2020/21 fees are not yet available. For guidance, the 2019/20 fees were:
UK and EU full-time fees: £9,250 per year
International full-time fees: £11,330 per year

Bursaries and scholarships

Graduation costs

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2018, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

48 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at PPP or BTEC Diploma at MP or  equivalent

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS 5.5 overall with a minimum of 5.0 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT 71 with a minimum of 19 in in each individual component- TOEFL is only valid for EU students
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.

Your application should reach UCAS by 15 January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until the end of June. The UCAS code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

The university cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.

Facilities

You’ll have full access to a variety of rehearsal spaces, including rehearsal rooms and a dance studio with sprung floor. There is also a 200-seat flexi-form space on campus that can be used for live performances. Final productions take place in a professional theatre venue.

On-site library facilities include industry specific books, articles, journals, DVDs and audio-visual resources to support research.

Solent University also offers an exciting and enriching environment with plenty of face-to-face support from your tutors and Student Services, as well as 24 hour access to our virtual learning platform.  

The course offers a balance of practical-theory to ensure you develop your skills and techniques through physical exploration alongside academic studies.
