About the course

Do you have a passion for journalism? Are you looking to further your career and increase your knowledge of multimedia communications and content? With an emphasis on brand journalism, content creation and campaign management across paid, owned, earned and shared platforms, Solent’s MA Journalism and Multimedia Communications will leave you well-placed to bring these skills to the workplace.

Moving forward from traditional news media journalism, this course focuses on the strategic development of brand and corporate journalism content. Students on this course will learn how to commission and manage work from PR, marketing and advertising specialists, to ultimately integrate brand journalism and run corporate newsrooms.

Journalism is about crafting and managing communication, altering perceptions and changing people’s lives. The power of a journalist comes through their ability to hold people to account – this is a central foundation to the course, which places students alongside the creative pathways of advertising and public relations to forge an innovative and far reaching working relationship. The course focuses on journalism as an originator of content and a driver of perception as they meet the boundaries of communications.

The Professional Practice module gives students work-placement and freelance opportunities, enhancing their professional skillset. Students will also be able to pitch for paid work at Solent Creatives, who specialise in connecting students with businesses who need creative support. These projects can help students to strengthen their portfolio of professional work.

The course concludes with a major project or dissertation. This is another opportunity for students to specialise their knowledge, conducting in-depth research into an area that complements their unique career ambitions.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2020/21 academic year are:
UK, EU and Channel Island full-time fees: £7,370
International full-time fees: £13,260
UK, EU and Channel Island part-time fees: £3,685 per year
International part-time fees: Students from outside the EU are usually unable to obtain a visa for part-time study. Please visit our visas and immigration page for more information.

Students in receipt of a postgraduate loan from the Student Loan Company are typically able to pay their tuition fees via instalments.

Optional costs

Optional costs could include a day trip to London for an agency visit. This has been done for three of the past six years on the MA PR degree.  Bus tickets are the cheapest option – under £20, and then an all central zones Underground ticket at another £10.

Bursaries and scholarships

Graduation costs

For graduates in 2020, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket was £15 in 2019, but this fee is subject to change for future years. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

Key entry requirements

An honours degree at 2:1 or higher in a related discipline.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.5 overall with minimum of 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in reading, listening and speaking
  • TOEFL IBT 92 with minimum of 22 in writing and a minimum of 19 in reading, listening and speaking
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a Pre-Sessional English Language Course for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

Applications for postgraduate courses can be made at any time prior to the start of the course. However, we strongly recommend you apply at your earliest convenience.

Alumni discount

Solent alumni could be eligible for up to a 50% reduction of tuition fees if returning to study a postgraduate course. The discount applied will be dependent on your undergraduate degree classification as follows:

Solent Alumni with a:

  • First (1.1) will be offered a 50% discount to study at PG level
  • 2.1 or 2.2 will be offered a 20% discount to study at PG level

The discount applied will be based on the most recently completed course.

If you are currently a student at Solent University and are continuing on without a break in your studies, your discount will be automatically applied on your return.

What you'll study

Year one

Journalism in a World of Converging Communication (30 credits)
This module covers both journalism theory and practice, and how they adapt to an evolving communications industry. The use of social media to craft and control engaging content for specific readerships is explored through the advancement of corporate communications, and how news is managed through web analytics to drive content specific to reader demands. The module explores the critical approaches that journalists require to be able to design and produce engaging content that drives future developments within the industry to keep it current and evolving, exceeding and advancing the needs of consumers rather than satisfying their current need. The module explores how the theory and practice of journalism is changing as communication moves across paid, owned, shared and earned media. Paradigm shift from traditional print based broadcast approaches are considered in the context of corporate newsrooms.

Multimedia Campaigns (30 credits)
In this module students get the practical opportunity to develop and implement a number of campaign activities across a wide variety of platforms, testing their ability to integrate paid, owned, shared and earned media in a PR campaign.

Media Measurement & Evaluation (15 credits)
This module introduces students to the challenge of measurement techniques applied in advertising, marketing, promotion and PR sectors, including the evolution of RoE (return on engagement)

Research Methods (15 credits)
This module raises the students’ research skills to Master’s level, including SPSS and other methodologies that are relevant to their particular areas of interest (Shared module)

Professional Practice (30 credits)
This module positions the MA programme in terms of the student’s career aspiration, identifying skill sets and development needs in a PDP, which forms the basis of a freelance/workplace project- and informs the student’s choice of Major Project or dissertation

Master’s Project (Practice Project, Consultancy Project or Dissertation):
The culmination of the MA degree, where the theory and practice learned in the previous modules informs the student’s principal learning outcome- a campaign that demonstrates their professional attainment or a dissertation that critically examines a crucial industry issue, generating original thinking. Both project and dissertation require primary research to a master’s level.

The university cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.


We have a fully-equipped IT centre with both PC and Mac computers. These feature industry-standard image manipulation, video, and audio editing software. Access to camera equipment and professional recording devices for podcast and video creation is highly likely, and access to photographic equipment is always available.

Solent is proud to offer students a range of high-end media facilities. Students also have the opportunity to access an extensive media loans service, where they can borrow high-end video production and photography equipment.


Students are taught by industry experts who have strong practitioner careers. The course is delivered by interactive seminars rather than lecture based.

The Professional Practice module requires students to undertake a work placement or complete a freelance project. Students are encouraged to source their own client (through Solent Creatives) or to find a work placement that is appropriate to their career ambitions. The minimum requirement for a placement is two weeks, however placements and projects can vary in length, depending on client needs.
