What does this course lead to?

Event management gives you a range of skills that will make you ideal for the industry, flexible and highly mobile; able to work anywhere in the world at events as diverse as brand activations, wedding planning, e-sports and mega events.

This course will also support a transition into the third sector, working with charities to raise money, or working for local councils, heritage and visitor sites who all seek to deliver events that will shape and inform their communities.

The problem solving, project management and communication skills gained on this course can also be utilised to pursue a career in business management or customer service.

Alternatively, you could consider becoming a freelance self-employed event manager or establishing your own event management agency as many of our alumni have done in the past.

Whether you wish to join a large established event company in order to travel the world, support your community, work for a charity or work independently, this course will give you the strong foundations you need for a varied and creative career.

Who is this course for?

Solent’s event management degree is ideally suited for those interested in developing skills in event management and the underlying business. It will give you an insight into all aspects of managing events from creative design, planning, and delivery. You will also discover the context of events, what they are, why we attend them and how brands and businesses use them as part of their strategy.

If you are looking for something that fuses theory and practice and provides the support and space to design your own events, then this is the course for you.

There is no requirement to have previously studied festival or event management, but a desire to learn more and an interest in what goes on behind the scenes at an event is essential.

I felt that the University offered enough support, if I had questions or needed advice.

Graduate stories

Emily's story

Emily Webb - England Senior Team Operations Coordinator and PA to Gareth Southgate, The Football Association

What made you choose to study at Solent?
I wasn't too sure what I wanted to do when I left university, but wanted to work within the events industry and also to travel. The events management course, taken alongside tourism, was perfect for me.

What do you do now and what do you find most enjoyable about your work?
I currently work with the England football team organising the operations and logistics for international matches. The most enjoyable part is being able to see parts of the world you wouldn't usually travel to.

What has been your biggest achievement in your work so far?
Taking an under-18's team out to South Korea for a football tournament within a week of starting!

How did you change as a person during your time at Solent?
During the three years, I developed skills that were transferable into the part-time work I was doing at a local football club. This then enabled me to apply for a full-time role there and succeed once I had completed my course.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of studying at Solent?
Make sure the course is interesting to you and something you would enjoy. Even deciding on my dissertation subject, I chose to write about something interesting to me - allowing me to enjoy the research supporting it.
