At Solent, you will develop the communications skills essential for a career in modern business, plus essential practical skills and experience to stand out from the crowd at interview – working on PR campaigns for real-world clients and learning key communication skills on this dynamic modern degree.

You will explore the modern PR and comms industry, build an in-depth knowledge and critical understanding of public relations practice, get to grips with the digital platforms and multimedia channels that define modern PR, and apply your skills and knowledge through live client briefs from the very start of your degree.

As well as learning all about the latest ideas, techniques and processes in the business, you will have the chance to work with multimedia hardware and software - learning how to produce audio packages or viral videos, and how to use the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite.

Putting your learning into practice is an essential part of this professionally-focused degree, with a minimum of four weeks experience built into the course at the end of the second year (level 5). And on completing the course, you may be eligible for professional registration as an associate of the Chartered Institute of Marketing or the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing – as well as having the option of accreditation in the APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ).

Who is this course for?

Solent’s PR and Communications Management course is ideally suited to students who are interested in a career at the heart of modern business, enterprise and management. You should have a keen interest in writing, digital media and creative work, and may come from a background in business, media, English, psychology or sociology, or subjects related to these areas.

The 2020/21 tuition fees are not yet available. For guidance, the 2019/20 fees were:

96 - 112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at MMM or BTEC Diploma at DM or equivalent qualification, or a combination of qualifications which comply with the minimum entry requirement of 96 UCAS points.
  • Direct entry into the second or third years may be considered for this course.
  • Applicants over the age of 21 may be considered based on relevant experience, without having the required tariff points.
  • Alternative entry to this course is available through the Foundation Year in Journalism, Advertising and Marketing.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.

Your application should reach UCAS by 15 January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until the end of June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

The university cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.

You will have access to our modern creative suites, featuring Apple Mac computers with the latest Adobe Creative Cloud Suite and other software. You can also access our dedicated radio production suites, as well as professional-grade film and photography equipment through our media store, including Canon XC15 cameras, lighting equipment and more.

Students may be eligible for professional registration at associate grade with either the Chartered Institute of Marketing or the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing, and have the chance to take an optional accreditation in the APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ).

Placements

Students are encouraged to undertake work experience at the end of level 4, in the summer break, and before level 5 begins. Help to find placements is available from the level leader and from Solent Futures, which offers access to the latest job opportunities and provides a wide range of resources designed to help you get and stay employed.

At the end of level 5, students must complete two, two-week work experience placements, to be undertaken during the summer break between level 5 and level 6. Support is provided by the unit leader and by Solent Futures.

Thomas Carr - Marketing Executive at Standard Brands

What is your favourite memory of your time at university?
The whole experience is something I will never forget, the friends I made and the lifestyle I led. If I had to pick one memory, it would be when our lecturer brought in a hostage negotiator! It was an incredibly interesting lesson and it taught us the value and importance of tailoring communication to the situation.

What do you do now and what does your job involve?
I work in the marketing department at Standard Brands (UK) Ltd. I'm involved in tactical planning, scheduling, execution and delivery through multiple media channels across global markets. I'm proud that I took a major role in implementing a new social media strategy for the business, enlisting a new agency to produce engaging social media content across the UK, Ireland and USA.

How did you change as a person during your time at Solent?
I gained a better understanding of the world, I went from a fairly sheltered life to, in a small way, being on my own (although my family were never far away). It taught me to fend for myself and ultimately aided me in evolving into the man I am today.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of studying at Solent?
I would say go for it, it's a great university filled with great lecturers! My sister followed my footsteps and studied at Solent.
