About the course

Do you want to work with athletes to improve their sporting potential? Could you provide specialist support and guidance aligned to their individual needs and aspirations? Solent’s Sport Performance Coaching degree will help you to better understand the principles of sport science. This CIMSPA endorsed course will help you develop the highly practical skills required for a career coaching athletes from a range of sports.

You’ll study relevant and applied scientific theory – physiology, biomechanics, and psychology, including integrated sports science topics, coaching principles, skills development, strength and conditioning, and performance and technique analysis - building essential underpinning knowledge for a career in coaching. This is combined with practical training and professional placement opportunities, giving you the chance to put theory into practice.

The course has been designed to offer progressive coaching opportunities as ability, knowledge and confidence develops. This includes coaching conducted in the safety of the class, delivering coaching sessions to talented school-age children from around the region, and placements that you’ll be able to organise yourself working with athletes, sports and organisations that interest you. In addition, multiple work experience opportunities are available, for example with Solent’s High-Performance Academy or with local sports clubs and athletes.

To further boost employability, this course has been designed to meet industry requirements, demonstrated by attaining endorsement from CIMPSA for the professional standards of ‘Coach’ and for ‘Safeguarding and Protecting Children’. You’ll also have opportunities to gain nationally recognised coaching qualifications throughout your time studying at Solent at discounted rates.

If you apply for this course with a placement year, you have the opportunity to undertake a year in industry between your second and third years.

What does this course lead to?

Previous graduates have gained sports coaching employment, including rugby coach, swimming coach, sailing coach, gymnastics coach and community football coach. Other more specialist graduate destinations include performance analyst and strength and conditioning coach.

Who is this course for?

Solent’s sport performance coaching course is ideal for sports enthusiasts who see their future working with athletes of all abilities, helping them to reach their sporting potential. Applicants do not require any prior coaching experience but should have an interest in the sciences, and a desire to coach athletes to enhance performance for competition rather than at participation or grassroots level.

Compulsory costs:

Students must purchase a Solent sports kit. As a package, this will cost approximately £137

Students are also required to undertake DBS criminal records checks as part of their enrolment. This is compulsory and is payable by the student at a cost of £55. The DBS process is completed online and students will be sent further guidance and the online link in advance to starting the course.

Graduation costs

For graduates in 2020, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket was £15 in 2019, but this fee is subject to change for future years. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

104-120 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • At least two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at DMM or BTEC Diploma at D*D or equivalent, which comply with the minimum entry requirement of 104 UCAS points.
  • Mathematics and English GCSE at grade C or above.
  • Desirable: A-level PE and/or a science.
  • All successful applicants will be required to undertake a criminal record check, processed through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  • Alternative entry is available through the  Sport, Health and Exercise Science Foundation Year.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website:

Your application should reach UCAS by 15 January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until the end of June. The UCAS code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

The university cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.


Students have access to the University’s professional sport and exercise facilities, including BASES Accredited Physiology and biomechanics laboratories, psychology labs, and practical lessons taught in the new Sports Complex Building, including use of the sports halls and within Solent’s High-Performance Academy training centre.

CIMSPA endorsed degree meeting the industry requirements and professional standards for ‘Coach’ and for ‘Safeguarding and Protecting Children’.

Industry links

Many of the course team are currently or have previously been involved with sports coaching and associated sports science disciplines, including research. Through this, the team have formed a number of relationships with industry. This has led to students having placement opportunities with the RFU, Southampton Football Club and Saints Foundation, local schools, etc.

Key industry guest speakers have also previously delivered lectures, including Commonwealth and Olympic coaches and athletes, and coaches and support staff from Premiership and international-level football clubs.


The course has been designed to offer progressive coaching opportunities as ability, knowledge and confidence develops. In the first year, coaching will be conducted in the safety of the University on internal participants. During the second year, students will deliver coaching sessions to talented school-age children from around the region, arranged by the course team. The optional placement year, and the final year of study will involve placements that the student will be able to organise for themselves working with athletes, sports and organisations that interest them.

In addition, multiple work experience opportunities are available, for example with Solent’s High Performance Academy or with local sports clubs and athletes.
