Local Student Bursary Scheme
In 2025, we proudly marked two major milestones: the 20th anniversary of achieving University status and the awarding of over £190,000 in bursary support to local students since the 2019/20 academic year. This bursary programme plays a vital role in supporting students from some of the least advantaged communities across southern Hampshire, providing £1,000 bursaries to help ease the financial pressures of studying. Below, you’ll find stories from a few of the students who have benefited from this support.
In the academic year 2024/25, we awarded 29 local bursaries.
Read what some of the recipients had to say:
“This bursary means so much to me and it will help me massively. I will be able to afford different necessities for my course such as books that will help me get better grades. I can use the money for food shops weekly so that I can get more food to eat and have a healthier diet. It will enable me to also have money for other financial things like a deposit on a house for next year which I am struggling to find money for. I can also use the money to be put towards travel to go home to visit my mum whilst she is having cancer treatment so that I can see her more often when I do not have lectures which I have not been able to do much due to not having the money to get back home. This would also mean that she has someone by her side during this tough time. Any leftover money will then be put towards a car to make it easier to travel to my mum and so that I have a way of travel next year when I have a house. I am so unbelievably grateful for this, and I cannot thank you enough and it means more to me than I can express. Thank you so much. It means a lot to me, and it will go to good use.”
BA (Hons) Criminology student, 2024/25 bursary recipient
“I’d like to say a massive thank you to the external donors of this bursary. This money will greatly change my university experience because I will finally be able to fund a laptop! Going into a career of videography a good laptop is definitely a necessity, so I am pleased to say that that purchase looks very doable thanks to the donors. As well as the laptop, other hardware I could have a look at are some cameras, tripods, lights or microphone.
As well as this, this bursary will also go towards any struggles that I have at university outside of my studies. Any food shops/ rent or bills are a major struggle for us students as we struggle to find the balance between work and university work. This bursary will go a long way in supporting us financially.”
BA (Hons) Film Production student, 2024/25 bursary recipient
“I am immensely thankful and thrilled to have been granted the Local Student Bursary. This recognition will significantly impact my life, as it will alleviate my financial concerns and enable me to focus entirely on my academic pursuits. The past decade has been tumultuous, particularly the recent years, during which I faced challenges I never imagined I would overcome. With the support of others and effective therapy, I have embarked on a new and promising journey. My aspiration is to become a mental health professional, assisting individuals who have encountered similar experiences. Your support brings me closer to achieving my goals and advancing my education. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the donors who made this award possible. I truly appreciate the existence of this bursary, which empowers students to realise their potential. I trust that all contributors recognise the significant influence their donations have on students such as myself, as well as the positive effect these contributions have on both our academic pursuits and our daily experiences.”

Alumni reflections: life after graduation for bursary recipients
The scheme provided financial support that enabled Luke to thrive in his studies. Since graduating, he has had success as a photographer, with his work exhibited both here in the UK and in Berlin. He says:
“Since graduating from my BA at Southampton Solent University, I have gone on to receive my MA in photography at the Royal College of Art. I’m currently applying to undertake a PhD back at Southampton Solent. Some of the work I created in my final year at Southampton Solent has also been shortlisted for two awards and exhibited three times, once in Portsmouth and twice in Berlin. This is completely down to my bursary as it enabled me to produce work that I would’ve never created otherwise, as the materials would’ve been inaccessible for me because of their cost. As I could continue to work with the photographic mediums I love, I had a portfolio that truly represented me as an artist, which led to me being accepted into the Royal College of Art, as they were interest in how I work with materials. Again, being able to buy materials and a working computer, for example, meant I could put my all into my BA at Southampton Solent and gave me the opportunity to push myself and achieve a first. Thanks to everything my bursary has allowed me to achieve, I’m hopeful of one day becoming a lecturer, which is what has always motivated me.”
