Chris has over two decades of experience in education, including 21 years in secondary education and leadership at an 'Outstanding' college. As Vice-Principal at Barton Peveril Sixth Form College, he spearheads the institution’s business services. Here, Chris tells us why he chose to study the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA) at Solent and how he's managing his studies around his work.
The CMDA offered the perfect opportunity to gain a formal management qualification while remaining in full-time employment. As someone already in a senior leadership role, I was keen to consolidate my strategic and operational experience with theoretical and practical academic learning. Solent University stood out because of its strong reputation for applied learning and its well-structured support for professionals balancing work and study. The curriculum aligned well with the complex and evolving nature of leadership within education, particularly as we navigate technological and organisational transformation.
The flexibility of the online delivery has been invaluable. With asynchronous content, live lectures, and access to virtual academic resources, I could manage my learning around a demanding leadership schedule. Solent's approach allowed me to engage meaningfully with the material during evenings and weekends, without compromising my responsibilities at work or at home. The digital tools used created a collaborative yet manageable environment for growth.
The programme has sharpened my strategic thinking and helped me to reflect critically on my leadership practice.
The programme has sharpened my strategic thinking and helped me to reflect critically on my leadership practice. Modules on organisational behaviour, project management, and innovation have been directly applicable to my role as Vice Principal for Business Services. For instance, my academic research on AI implementation has not only enhanced my understanding of digital transformation but also led to tangible improvements in our operational efficiency. I now approach change management and team leadership with a more evidence-informed, values-driven mindset.
If you're prepared to embrace the dual demands of work and academic study, the CMDA can be a transformative experience. My advice is to choose a topic or research area that aligns closely with your professional role - this allows you to apply learning in real time and generate immediate value for your organisation. Also, build a consistent study routine early on and don’t hesitate to reach out for support; the university tutors and peer network are excellent resources.
One of the biggest benefits has been the diffusion of best practice and strategic thinking across the organisation. The research and project work I’ve undertaken has influenced key initiatives, such as embedding AI into college operations and enhancing risk management frameworks. The CMDA has also prompted more collaborative conversations within the senior team around innovation, data use, and future workforce planning. In essence, it has helped translate individual development into institutional progress.
Absolutely. The CMDA is an excellent route for developing middle and senior leaders in the education sector. It blends practical management training with strategic insight, which is crucial in a time of financial constraint, policy change, and technological disruption. For employers, it’s a cost-effective way to build leadership capacity from within, aligned with real organisational needs. I would strongly recommend it to any college or school looking to future-proof its leadership team.
