This free-to-attend online seminar series aims at both centring and critiquing discussions around the ‘Global South’.

Pedagogical Love Through Othermothering and Sister Circles: A Black Educator’s Experience in a Predominantly Latino School in the United States

Speaker: Christine Smithson, University of Maryland

Christine will be sharing highlights from her recent publication in which she wrote a personal narrative about her lived experiences of 'othermothering' and 'sistering' as a teacher in a high school in Florida. As a black female educator, Christine taught for 12 years at a school where students hailed from low income homes where parents lacked the tools to educationally support their children and where black teachers were few. She recalls these experiences and how through her pedagogy and practice, she showed love to her students who were mostly immigrant, poor and Latin American and where she received support from her 'sisters' who were colleagues.

About the speaker

Christine Smithson is a PhD student in the International Education Policy programme at the University of Maryland College Park. She is a former high school teacher and school leader in the United States. Her research focuses on adolescents and schooling in Latin America and the Caribbean.
